Quick Overview

The R&B Supersized Econo Turnout Gear Bag is a high-volume, single-cavity transport and storage system used by firefighters, recruits, and emergency response personnel to consolidate and move bulky PPE sets, including full structural turnout gear ensembles, between station, home, and deployment sites.

The bag's primary structural capability comes from its 1000 Denier Cordura Nylon body with urethane coating, which resists abrasion from concrete apparatus bay floors and blocks moisture, mildew, and grime from reaching interior contents. The single-cavity main compartment provides 7,200 cubic inches of capacity, purpose-built for bulky, non-uniform loads like turnout coats, helmets, and boots that would not fit in compartmentalized designs. All internal organization is the operator's responsibility, requiring a deliberate packing strategy to maintain load stability and protect sensitive items such as helmet face shields.

The transport system uses 2-inch wrap-around webbing handles that extend down the sides and underneath the bag body, distributing total load weight across the webbing rather than the fabric seams. This design critically reduces the risk of catastrophic structural failure under heavy loads, which can exceed 100 lbs when two sets of wet turnout gear are stowed. A Number 10 YKK self-repairing nylon coil zipper provides full-length access and can be restored from coil separation without tools by running the slider back over the separation point.

Field readiness for this bag depends on strict adherence to decontamination and moisture management protocols. The urethane coating provides water resistance, not waterproofing, and storing damp gear in a sealed bag promotes mildew growth and accelerates PPE degradation. Contaminated gear must undergo gross field decontamination before loading, as this bag is a transport device, not a sealed containment unit.

Field Application Steps

1. ESTABLISH A CLEAN WORK SURFACE: Place the empty, fully unzipped bag on a clean, dry surface before loading to prevent contamination of the interior from the staging area.

2. CONDUCT GEAR INVENTORY AND LAYOUT: Lay out all items adjacent to the bag to confirm a complete inventory and plan the loading sequence before any gear enters the compartment.

3. ESTABLISH THE BASE LOAD: Place heavy, dense items at opposite ends of the bag floor for balance. Position primary boots at one end and spare boots at the other end, soles down.

4. BUILD THE CORE LOAD: Fold bunker pants and place them in the center of the bag on top of the handle webbing. Fold the turnout coat and place it on top of the pants to centralize the main bulk of the weight.

5. POSITION CRITICAL ITEMS: Place helmets on top of the soft gear with brims down and face shields fully retracted. Fill voids around the helmets and boots with spare hoods, gloves, and smaller items to prevent shifting.

6. ADD ANCILLARY GEAR LAST: Pack personal clothing and non-PPE items into remaining space after all primary PPE is positioned. This fills voids and prevents the primary load from shifting during transport.

7. CLEAR THE ZIPPER TRACK: Run a hand along the full length of the zipper track to confirm no fabric, straps, or gear will foul the slider before closing.

8. CLOSE AND SECURE THE BAG: Grasp the zipper pull and close in a single, smooth motion. Do not force the zipper over any obstruction. If significant resistance is present, reopen and repack to reduce tension on the closure.

9. EXECUTE A SAFE LIFT: Squat down, grasp both webbed handles together, and lift with the legs while keeping the back straight. For any load that cannot be safely managed by one individual, execute a two-person lift to prevent musculoskeletal injury.
