Quick Overview

The Model 182 Tactical Emergency Soft Stretcher is a rapid patient extraction device used by tactical operators, first responders, and emergency personnel to move casualties from a point of injury to a casualty collection point in high-threat, confined, or mass casualty environments.

The Model 182 is classified as a movement-assist tool, not a primary medical transport platform. Its 22 oz. vinyl body is fluid-impervious with a low-friction surface engineered for drags over concrete, dirt, and flooring. With a maximum working load of 600 lbs (272 kg) including all attached equipment, it supports single-operator drag or coordinated multi-operator lift with 2, 4, or 8 personnel. Deployment is rapid from a rolled, bagged configuration sized for vehicle kits, go-bags, or tactical loadouts.

The stretcher's component system is purpose-built for speed and clarity under stress. Two red webbing drag handles at the foot-end provide immediate visual identification in low-light conditions and are designed for a low-profile extraction posture. Eight black webbing carry handles, four per side, serve as designated grip points for multi-operator lifts once the casualty is clear of the threat area. The black chest strap with buckle is mandatory for all drag operations, routing high in the axilla to secure the patient without interfering with breathing.

The Model 182 provides no spinal immobilization and is not intended for prolonged transport. Its use concludes upon transfer of the casualty to a definitive transport device, such as a rigid litter, backboard, or ambulance gurney, in a secure cold zone. Pre-deployment inspection of all webbing, vinyl integrity, and buckle function is required before every operational deployment.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually and physically inspect all red and black webbing handles and the chest strap for fraying, cuts, sun damage, or compromised stitching, paying close attention to handle attachment points. Unroll the vinyl body and inspect the full surface for punctures, tears, deep gouges, or chemical degradation, then test the chest strap buckle for positive lock and proper function.

2. DEPLOYMENT AND POSITIONING: Remove the stretcher from its storage bag and unroll it fully on the ground parallel to the casualty. Orient the stretcher so the casualty's head will be positioned at the end without the red drag handles.

3. PATIENT LOADING: With a minimum of two operators, execute a coordinated log-roll to place the casualty onto the center of the vinyl surface. Minimize movement of the head, neck, and spine to the extent the tactical situation allows, and verify the casualty is centered on the stretcher before proceeding.

4. SECURING FOR DRAG: Route the black chest strap over the casualty's upper chest, positioned high in the axilla (underarms), to prevent patient slide-off and avoid breathing interference. Fasten and tighten securely, snug but not constricted, and verify positive buckle engagement. This step is mandatory before any drag operation.

5. EXECUTE SINGLE-OPERATOR DRAG (METHOD A): Assume a low-profile crouch at the casualty's feet and grasp both red drag handles firmly. Using leg and core muscles, pull in a smooth, continuous motion toward the designated safe area while maintaining situational awareness throughout the extraction.

6. EXECUTE MULTI-OPERATOR LIFT (METHOD B): Once the casualty is in a secure area, assemble a lift team of 2, 4, or up to 8 operators and position personnel evenly on both sides, each grasping a black side carry handle. The team leader issues the command sequence "Prepare to lift, LIFT!" and the team lifts in unison to move the casualty to the next echelon of care.

7. TRANSFER TO DEFINITIVE TRANSPORT: Upon reaching the casualty collection point or cold zone, transfer the patient to a rigid litter, backboard, or ambulance gurney. The Model 182's operational role concludes at this handoff point.

8. POST-OPERATION DECONTAMINATION AND STOWAGE: Clean all surfaces with a 10% bleach solution, hospital-grade disinfectant, or soap and water, then rinse thoroughly. Ensure the stretcher is completely dry before stowing, then roll tightly from the head-end so the red drag handles remain on the outside of the roll for rapid identification, and secure in the storage bag away from UV light, extreme temperatures, and sharp objects.
