The R&B Turnout Gear Strap is a load-bearing suspension system designed for structural firefighters and emergency operators who need to transfer the weight of turnout or bunker pants from the shoulders and spine to the hips during extended incident operations.

The strap system addresses a specific and well-documented operational problem: cumulative fatigue caused by water-soaked bunker pants bearing down on suspenders during prolonged deployments such as overhaul, defensive operations, and wildland assignments. By repositioning the load to the iliac crest, the strap reduces upper back and shoulder strain, preserving operator endurance when it matters most. The system accommodates waist sizes up to 54 inches, making it deployable over all layers of PPE without modification to the pants themselves.

Three components define the system's field capability. The 2-inch heavy-duty nylon webbing serves as the primary load distribution structure, spreading weight across the hip bones to prevent pressure points. The Delrin side-release buckle provides reliable one-handed engagement and disengagement, including with structural firefighting gloves, and maintains function after exposure to water and fireground contaminants. The tri-glide slide allows precise length adjustment so the strap seats correctly on the iliac crest, which is the only position that delivers effective weight transfer.

This device is classified as a non-load-bearing personal equipment belt. It is not rated by NFPA, ANSI, or any life-safety standards body, and it must never be used for fall arrest, rappelling, hoisting, or victim drag operations. Direct flame impingement will cause complete failure of both the nylon webbing and the Delrin buckle. Inspection before each shift and immediate retirement upon identification of cuts, buckle damage, compromised stitching, or thermal exposure are mandatory readiness protocols.
