Quick Overview

A firefighter gear bag is a high-capacity, durably constructed transport and storage system used by structural firefighters, wildland crews, tactical law enforcement, and SAR technicians to stage, move, and contain a complete PPE ensemble between quarters, apparatus, and personal vehicles.

The R&B U-Shape Firefighter Gear Bag is built around a 6,000 cubic inch main compartment with an 18-inch high profile, allowing a full turnout ensemble including coat, pants, boots, and helmet to be loaded without compressing the helmet's internal suspension. The U-shaped #10 YKK zipper runs along three sides of the top panel, opening the bag completely flat for unobstructed access and faster load cycles compared to straight-zip or top-load duffel designs. The 1000 Denier Cordura nylon shell resists abrasion, punctures, and tears across concrete, asphalt, and apparatus decking, and dragging via the end-mounted handles is an intended and engineered function.

The urethane interior coating provides the contamination containment capability that makes this bag operationally critical for post-incident stowage. Soiled, saturated, and contaminated gear is loaded directly into the sealed main compartment, suppressing off-gassing and preventing cross-contamination of apparatus cabs and personal vehicles during transport. The bag functions as a containment vessel, not a decontamination tool, and must itself undergo departmental cleaning protocols before returning to service with clean gear.

The zippered end pocket provides dedicated isolation for sensitive components such as an SCBA facepiece stored in a protective pouch, spare gloves, or a personal hygiene kit. This separation prevents lens scratching, regulator damage, and cross-contamination between clean ancillary items and bulk turnout gear. For long-term readiness, the bag should be air dried completely after cleaning and stored in a climate-controlled area away from prolonged UV exposure.

Field Application Steps

1. OPEN THE BAG FULLY: Place the empty bag on a flat surface and fully actuate the U-shaped zipper along all three sides of the top panel to open the flap completely, creating a large, unobstructed rectangular loading opening.

2. STAGE BOOTS FIRST: Place boots upright in the center of the main compartment to establish a stable foundation and maximize use of the 18-inch depth profile.

3. LOAD TURNOUT PANTS: Fold turnout pants and place them over and around the boots. Orient them for rapid donning access if redeployment is possible.

4. LAYER THE TURNOUT COAT: Lay the turnout coat flat across the top of the pants to keep it accessible and reduce bulk compression on the lower layers.

5. PLACE THE HELMET: Set the helmet top-down onto the coat. Verify there are no pressure points on the helmet's internal suspension system or face shield before closing.

6. STOW SENSITIVE COMPONENTS: Place the SCBA facepiece in its protective pouch and stow it in the zippered end pocket. Add hood, gloves, or other ancillary items as mission requirements dictate.

7. SECURE ALL ZIPPERS: Close the main compartment zipper and the end pocket zipper fully to protect contents during transport.

8. POST-INCIDENT DEPLOYMENT: On-scene, place the opened bag on a decon tarp or cleared ground before doffing. The wide U-shaped opening provides a large target zone that minimizes contact between soiled gear and the bag's exterior.

9. LOAD CONTAMINATED GEAR: Following departmental doffing procedures, place all contaminated gear directly into the main compartment. The urethane-coated interior will contain moisture and particulates.

10. SEAL FOR TRANSPORT: Close the main compartment zipper completely to contain contaminants and suppress off-gassing during transport to the station or decon area.

11. USE END HANDLES FOR STOWAGE: Use the end-mounted drag and lift handles to move the bag into an exterior apparatus compartment, minimizing direct operator contact with potentially contaminated exterior surfaces.

12. POST-USE INSPECTION AND DECON: After each contaminated use, visually inspect all stitching at handle and zipper anchor points, check webbing for frays or cuts, and process the bag through departmental cleaning and decontamination procedures before returning it to service with clean gear.
