Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Yukon SCBA Mask Bag is a dedicated protective storage bag used by structural firefighters, HAZMAT operators, and industrial respirator users to safeguard SCBA facepiece lenses from scratches, contamination, and micro-abrasions during storage and transport.

A compromised SCBA lens is an operational liability. Scratches and smudges cause visual distortion, obscure hazards, and can induce disorientation in smoke-filled, low-light IDLH environments. The Yukon bag addresses this risk through a nylon exterior shell for abrasion resistance and a soft micro-fabric interior lining that cradles the polycarbonate lens and polishes away minor smudges upon insertion and removal. This construction makes it a preventative control measure, not a convenience item.

The bag is built for field conditions and rapid deployment. A full-width Velcro hook-and-loop closure is engineered for gloved-hand operation, delivering audible and tactile confirmation of a secure seal. A rear D-ring supports hanging storage on apparatus hooks, gear lockers, and staging racks, keeping the facepiece accessible and accountable at the start of every shift. A clear ID window allows operators to assign the bag by name, unit, or apparatus, eliminating accidental facepiece swapping in multi-crew environments.

Sustainment of this bag is straightforward but non-negotiable. Inspection is required at the start of each shift, after each use, and any time the facepiece is inspected. The bag must never be used to stow a soiled or wet facepiece, as doing so permanently fouls the micro-fabric lining and transfers contamination to the mask on the next donning.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM FACEPIECE IS CLEAN AND DRY: Verify the facepiece lens, seals, and body are completely clean and dry before stowage. Stowing a wet mask promotes microbial growth; stowing a dirty mask contaminates the liner and risks scratching the lens.

2. INSPECT THE BAG INTERIOR: Visually and physically check the micro-fabric lining for embedded debris such as grit or glass fragments. Remove all foreign material before inserting the facepiece.

3. PREPARE THE FACEPIECE FOR STOWAGE: Detach the mask-mounted regulator (MMR) if your departmental SOP requires removal for storage. Confirm the facepiece is in proper condition before proceeding.

4. ORIENT AND INSERT LENS FIRST: Hold the bag open with one hand and insert the facepiece lens first. The bag dimensions of 14 inches high by 9 inches deep are designed to accommodate the natural curvature of most modern SCBA facepieces.

5. SEAT THE MASK FULLY: Press the facepiece down until it is fully seated at the bottom of the bag with the lens in maximum contact with the micro-fabric lining.

6. CLOSE AND SEAL THE FLAP: Fold the top flap over and press firmly along the entire length of the Velcro closure. A properly seated closure will be both audible and tactile.

7. VERIFY AND UPDATE THE ID WINDOW: Confirm the identification card in the clear vinyl window is correct, current, and legible. This step is critical for individual-issue equipment and multi-crew accountability.

8. STAGE THE BAG FOR DUTY: Use the D-ring to hang the bag in its designated location on the apparatus, gear locker, or staging rack. Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of the bag.

9. CONDUCT SHIFT AND POST-USE INSPECTIONS: At the start of each shift and after each use, inspect the nylon exterior for rips or tears, the micro-fabric lining for debris or contamination, the D-ring for bending or cracking, the ID window for clarity, and the Velcro closure for full engagement along its entire length.

10. CLEAN USING APPROVED PROTOCOL WHEN REQUIRED: Empty the bag completely, turn it inside out if possible, and clean the lining with a damp cloth and mild soap and water solution. Scrub the exterior nylon shell with a brush and the same solution, rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue, and air dry completely. Do not use machine dryers, as high heat damages nylon and vinyl components.

11. REMOVE FROM SERVICE AT END OF SERVICE LIFE: Take the bag out of rotation immediately if any of the following are present: punctures or tears exposing the interior lining, stitching failure at the D-ring attachment point, a Velcro closure that no longer secures the flap, or permanent interior contamination that cannot be resolved through standard cleaning protocol.
