Quick Overview

The R&B "Z" PAK Organizer Insert is a rapid-access medical station insert designed to transform a standard dump-style trauma bag into a tiered, organized workstation, enabling trained EMS personnel to locate and deploy critical supplies in seconds during high-stress medical incidents.

The Z PAK achieves operational efficiency through its accordion "Z" fold panel system, which unfolds three interconnected panels to a full length of 34 inches. This linear deployment eliminates layered compartment searches and presents all stowed supplies in a single, visible field. Clear vinyl pockets allow at-a-glance inventory verification without unzipping, which is critical for pre-mission readiness and on-scene resource management. All pockets are secured with YKK zippers to prevent spillage during aggressive transport or bag inversion.

The insert functions as an internal chassis within a host trauma bag and is not a standalone carry system. The host bag must meet minimum internal dimensions of 18 inches long by 9 inches wide by 11 inches deep. A designated retention area accommodates a "C" size oxygen cylinder, preventing shift during transport and protecting the regulator assembly and surrounding supplies. Integrated carry handles allow the entire loaded insert to be removed from the host bag in a single, controlled motion on arrival at scene.

Sustainment of the Z PAK requires pre-shift inspection of structural integrity, zipper function, vinyl clarity, and content verification. Decontamination follows agency protocols for bloodborne pathogens, using appropriate cleaning solutions applied to all nylon and vinyl surfaces, followed by thorough rinsing and complete air drying before restocking. The insert must be returned to its full operational loadout after every use before being returned to mission-ready status.

Field Application Steps

1. DEVELOP A LOAD PLAN: Unfold the empty Z PAK on a clean, flat surface. Establish a standardized load plan based on your operational protocol, such as MARCH or ABCDE, grouping like items together before packing begins.

2. PACK CLEAR VINYL POCKETS BY PANEL: Load Panel A with airway and breathing supplies such as oral and nasal airways, chest seals, and decompression needles. Load Panel B with circulation supplies including tourniquets, pressure dressings, hemostatics, and IV kits. Load Panel C with diagnostics and miscellaneous items such as a BP cuff, stethoscope, shears, and tape. Do not overstuff pockets, as this strains zippers and obscures visual identification.

3. SECURE THE OXYGEN CYLINDER: If required by protocol, place a "C" size oxygen cylinder in the designated retention area and confirm it is fully secured before proceeding.

4. CLOSE ALL ZIPPERS COMPLETELY: Close every YKK zipper on the insert. All zippers must be fully closed to ensure total equipment retention during transport.

5. VERIFY HOST BAG COMPATIBILITY: Confirm the host trauma bag's main compartment meets the minimum dimensions of 18 inches long by 9 inches wide by 11 inches deep. Do not force the insert into an undersized bag, as this will compromise structural integrity and impede rapid deployment under stress.

6. FOLD AND LOAD THE INSERT INTO THE HOST BAG: Carefully fold the loaded Z PAK into its compact accordion-style "Z" configuration. Slide the folded insert into the main compartment of the host bag, ensuring the integrated handles are oriented for immediate access upon arrival on scene.

7. EXECUTE ON-SCENE DEPLOYMENT: On arrival, open the host bag and grasp the integrated handles to pull the insert free in a single controlled motion. Place the insert on a stable surface and unfold all panels fully. All medical supplies are visible and accessible upon complete panel extension, with the workstation ready for immediate use.

8. CONDUCT POST-INCIDENT RE-STOWAGE: Note all supplies used and flag any critical items requiring immediate restocking. Wipe gross contaminants from the insert surface before folding. Fold the insert back to its "Z" configuration with all remaining supplies secured in zippered pockets, then return it to the host bag for transport to station.

9. PERFORM DECONTAMINATION AT STATION: Remove all medical supplies from the insert. Prepare a cleaning solution per your agency's bloodborne pathogen protocol, such as a 1:10 bleach solution or an approved commercial disinfectant. Manually scrub all nylon and vinyl surfaces, paying close attention to zippers and seams, then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all chemical residue.

10. AIR DRY AND RESTOCK TO FULL OPERATIONAL LOADOUT: Allow the insert to air dry completely before restocking. Do not apply high heat, as it will damage the vinyl. Once dry, restock all pockets to their designated loadout, conduct a full inspection per Section 5.1, and return the unit to mission-ready status.
