Quick Overview

The Rothco G.I. Style Stainless Steel Canteen is a 1.3-quart single-wall stainless steel water container used by operators, hikers, and emergency preparedness personnel to transport, store, and field-purify drinking water in austere environments where reliable hydration is mission-critical.

The canteen's single-wall stainless steel construction enables direct-fire boiling, making it a dual-purpose hydration and water purification vessel without requiring additional equipment. Its kidney-shaped profile is engineered to nest within a standard G.I. canteen cup, integrating it into a compact cook-and-drink system suited for dismounted operations, search and rescue, vehicle sustainment kits, and bug-out bag deployment. The cap retaining chain and screw-off cap with internal polymer gasket form the sealing system, and seal integrity is mission-critical: a cracked or missing gasket renders the canteen unfit for field use.

Purification protocol depends on field conditions and available resources. The boiling method requires a full rolling boil for a minimum of one minute, extended to three minutes above 6,500 feet, with the cap completely removed during heating. The chemical method requires proper contact time with purification tablets or drops sized for approximately 1.25 liters, including treatment of the cap threads. Both methods address biological pathogens only. The canteen does not filter particulates, chemicals, or heavy metals, and the operator remains responsible for sourcing the best available water.

Pre-deployment readiness requires a four-point inspection: visual check of the canteen body for structural damage, seal check of the polymer gasket for cracks or dry rot, chain check for secure attachment at both anchor points, and a leak test by inverting a capped, filled canteen. Long-term storage protocol requires the canteen to be cleaned, fully dried, and stored with the cap off to prevent moisture buildup and bacterial growth.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Inspect the canteen body for deep dents, cracks, or punctures. Remove the cap and examine the polymer gasket for cracks, deformities, or dry rot, confirming it is correctly seated in the cap groove.

2. CHAIN AND LEAK VERIFICATION: Verify the retaining chain is securely attached at both the cap and the canteen neck. Fill the canteen with water, secure the cap, and invert to check for leaks around the seal before moving to the field.

3. WATER COLLECTION: Unscrew the cap and allow it to hang freely from the retaining chain. Submerge the opening facing upstream at a point with clear, fast-moving water, and fill to within 1 to 2 inches of the top to allow for boiling expansion and prevent spillage.

4. PURIFICATION BY BOILING: Remove the cap completely before applying any heat. Place the canteen upright on a stable heat source and bring to a full rolling boil for a minimum of 1 minute, or 3 minutes if operating above 6,500 feet. Remove using leather gloves or multi-tool pliers and allow to cool fully before capping.

5. PURIFICATION BY CHEMICAL METHOD: Fill the canteen per the collection step. Add purification tablets or drops according to manufacturer instructions for approximately 1.25 liters. Cap securely, agitate, then slightly loosen the cap and invert to treat the threads. Re-tighten and wait the full prescribed contact time before consuming.

6. TRANSPORT AND STOW: Once water is purified and the canteen has cooled, tighten the cap securely. Stow in a designated belt pouch or pack location to protect the canteen from damage and maintain ready access during movement.

7. POST-MISSION CLEANING: Empty the canteen completely. Wash the interior with warm water, mild soap, and a bottle brush to scrub all inner surfaces. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.

8. DRYING AND STORAGE: Allow the canteen body and cap to air dry completely and separately before storage. Store the clean, dry canteen in a cool, dry place with the cap off or resting loosely in the opening to ensure full air circulation and prevent bacterial growth.
