Quick Overview

The Rothco 2-Quart Collapsible Canteen is a flexible, high-capacity bulk water transport and storage vessel used by operators, hikers, and field personnel to carry reserve hydration during extended dismounted operations where water resupply is infrequent or uncertain.

The canteen body is constructed from Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, a durable flexible material that collapses flat when empty, conserving critical space in any loadout configuration. At full capacity it holds 2 quarts or 64 ounces of water, making it a capable reserve carrier when a primary hydration bladder is projected to run dry. It is gravity-fed and non-pressurized, designed for transport and decanting rather than hands-free drinking. Ideal deployment platforms include assault packs, rucksacks, go-bags, and vehicle kits.

Field readiness depends on proper sanitization before deployment and disciplined filling protocol in the field. When filling from unimproved water sources such as streams or ponds, chemical treatment or filtration is mandatory before consumption. The canteen should be filled to approximately 95 percent capacity under normal conditions to allow for thermal expansion and ease of sealing. In freezing conditions, capacity must not exceed 75 percent to prevent seam rupture.

Material integrity is a non-negotiable readiness consideration. The EVA bladder is not puncture-proof and must be protected from sharp objects including knives, tools, loose ammunition, and untaped MOLLE strap ends. The canteen is rated for potable water storage only and must never be used for fuel, solvents, alcohol, or high-sugar beverages, as these substances degrade the material and contaminate future water supplies.

Field Application Steps

1. WASH INTERIOR: Thoroughly wash the inside of the canteen with warm water and mild, non-scented soap before first use or after extended storage. Rinse completely until no soap residue or odor remains.

2. SANITIZE: Fill the canteen with water and add a standard purification tablet or approximately 1/4 teaspoon of diluted bleach solution per 2 quarts. Agitate the solution, then allow it to stand for a minimum of 30 minutes.

3. EMPTY, RINSE, AND DRY: Empty the sanitizing solution and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow the canteen to air dry completely with the cap removed to prevent microbial growth before stowing.

4. PRE-MISSION INSPECTION: Visually inspect the entire body for cracks, pinholes, deep abrasions, and signs of delamination, paying close attention to all seams. Check cap and neck threads for damage, dirt, or debris, then verify the cap retainer loop is intact.

5. PERFORM LEAK TEST: Fill the canteen with water, seal the cap, apply firm pressure to the body, and inspect all surfaces for leakage before deploying into the field.

6. RETRIEVE AND UNSEAL FOR FILLING: Remove the collapsed canteen from its stowed location. Unscrew the cap and confirm the retainer loop keeps it attached to the canteen neck.

7. FILL TO CAPACITY: Submerge the fill port in the water source or place it under the outflow of a filtration device. Allow the bladder to expand naturally as it fills, and do not over-pressurize. Fill to approximately 95 percent capacity under normal conditions, or no more than 75 percent in freezing conditions.

8. TREAT NON-POTABLE WATER: If the source is a stream, pond, or any unimproved water point, apply your issued chemical treatment immediately after filling. Observe the required wait time for your specific treatment before consuming the water.

9. EXPEL AIR AND SEAL: Gently squeeze the canteen to expel excess air until water is level with the fill port threads. Securely screw the cap on with threads properly aligned to prevent cross-threading, which will cause leaks.

10. VERIFY SEAL AND STOW: Invert the canteen and apply light pressure, then visually inspect for any leakage around the cap seal. Place the canteen in a designated pouch or internal pack compartment protected from sharp objects, wrapping it in a spare clothing item if no dedicated pouch is available.

11. DISPENSE AND CONTROL FLOW: To drink or decant into a primary container, remove the cap and apply manual pressure to the flexible body to control the flow rate. Reseal the cap securely after each use.

12. COLLAPSE AND RETURN TO STOW: Once empty, collapse the canteen by rolling or folding from the bottom up to expel all remaining air. Screw the cap back on and return the canteen to its designated stowed location.
