Quick Overview

The Rothco 3-Piece Canteen Kit is a field-integrated water transport and purification system used by operators, hikers, and emergency preparedness personnel to collect, boil, and carry potable water in austere environments.

The kit consists of three purpose-matched components functioning as a single system: a 1-quart BPA-free plastic canteen for water transport, a heavy-gauge aluminum cup for boiling and cooking, and a polyester cover with felt lining, dual snap-button closure, an external accessory pouch, and ALICE Keeper Clips for attachment to load-bearing equipment. Each component nests within the next, keeping the assembly compact and field-ready. Understanding the function and nomenclature of all three components before deployment is a baseline readiness requirement.

Water purification via boiling is the primary field capability of this system. Bringing collected water to a full rolling boil for a minimum of one minute neutralizes biological pathogens including bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. At altitudes above 6,500 feet, the protocol extends to a minimum of three minutes. Boiling does not remove chemical pollutants, heavy metals, or particulates, so operators should always select the clearest, fastest-moving source available and pre-filter turbid water through cloth before heating.

Safe operation requires strict component discipline. The plastic canteen is rated for cold liquid transport only and must never be exposed to direct flame or high heat. The aluminum cup reaches scalding temperatures during and after boiling and should be handled with a gloved hand, multi-tool, or stick through the handles until confirmed cool. In sub-freezing conditions, fill the canteen no more than three-quarters full to prevent cracking from water expansion.

Field Application Steps

1. DETACH AND DISASSEMBLE: Unclip the canteen kit from your load-bearing equipment by releasing the ALICE Keeper Clips. Open both snap-button closures on the cover and remove the nested canteen and cup assembly as a single unit.

2. ISOLATE COMPONENTS: Separate the aluminum cup from the bottom of the canteen. Unscrew the canteen cap and keep it within immediate reach to prevent field loss.

3. COLLECT WATER: Submerge the aluminum cup directly into the water source. Fill to approximately one inch below the rim to prevent boiling over during heating.

4. PREPARE FOR HEAT APPLICATION: Fully extend both butterfly handles on the aluminum cup until they are locked open. Place the cup on a controlled heat source such as a portable stove or an established coal bed.

5. ACHIEVE PURIFICATION: Bring the water to a full, rolling boil and maintain it for a minimum of one minute. If operating at altitudes above 6,500 feet, maintain the rolling boil for a minimum of three minutes.

6. REMOVE, COOL, AND TRANSFER: Use a gloved hand, multi-tool, or a stick through the handles to remove the cup from the heat source. Place it on a non-flammable surface to cool, then pour the purified water into the plastic canteen and secure the cap.

7. REASSEMBLE AND STOW: Fold the butterfly handles flat against the cup. Nest the cup onto the canteen bottom and slide the assembly into the cover. Secure both snap-button closures and reattach the ALICE clips to your load-bearing equipment before resuming movement.
