Quick Overview

The Rothco 5-Piece Aluminum Mess Kit is a 0.6-pound individual field cooking system used for ration preparation and consumption in austere environments by backpackers, SAR technicians, and emergency preparedness operators.

The kit consists of five components across two functional groups. The cooking and heating group includes a frying pan with a folding handle, a deep-walled saucepan, and a fitted lid that reduces boil time and conserves fuel. The consumption and serving group includes a shallow plate and a plastic cup rated for cold or lukewarm liquids only. Each component nests inside the next for transport, with the cup innermost and the frying pan serving as the outer cover, a configuration that protects internal components and minimizes noise during movement.

Operational capability covers boiling, simmering, frying, rehydrating freeze-dried meals, and heating water for beverages or field decontamination. The kit is engineered for single-operator use per meal cycle and is not dimensioned for group cooking. Heat management is a critical readiness factor: heavy-gauge aluminum conducts heat rapidly, and the kit is designed for portable backpacking stoves or hot coals, not direct exposure to large open flames, which can warp or melt the material.

Field sustainment requires thorough cleaning after every use, with focused attention on rolled edges and the handle mechanism where food particles can trap and promote bacterial growth. In austere conditions, clean sand or non-poisonous vegetation serves as a scouring agent. Components must be air-dried completely before re-nesting to prevent corrosion.

Field Application Steps

1. WORKSTATION ESTABLISHMENT: Select a stable, level surface for your heat source and clear all flammable material, including dry grass, leaves, and fuel sources, from the immediate area before deploying the kit.

2. KIT DISASSEMBLY AND PREPARATION: Separate the frying pan from the saucepan base and remove all internal components, including the lid, plate, and cup, onto a clean surface. Unfold the frying pan handle and confirm it is fully extended and seated securely before applying heat.

3. WATER BOILING: Fill the saucepan with the required amount of water, center it securely on the stove support arms, and place the lid on top to retain heat and conserve fuel. Bring the water to a rolling boil and handle the saucepan only with a glove, pot holder, or thick cloth.

4. MEAL AND BEVERAGE PREPARATION: Pour the required quantity of boiling water directly into the dehydrated meal pouch and set aside to rehydrate. Allow remaining hot water to cool to a palatable temperature before transferring to the plastic cup. The plastic cup is not heat-resistant and will melt and deform if exposed to boiling liquid.

5. FRYING PROTOCOL: If cooking fresh rations, use low-to-medium heat on the frying pan and apply oil if available. Do not use high heat settings, as the aluminum conducts rapidly and will scorch contents or warp the pan bottom.

6. CONSUMPTION AND BREAKDOWN: Serve the prepared meal onto the plate. Consume the meal and beverage before beginning breakdown to allow components to cool safely.

7. CLEANING AND STOWAGE: Once all components are cool, clean with a non-abrasive scrubber and biodegradable soap and water. In austere conditions, use clean sand, dirt, or snow as a scouring agent, rinse thoroughly, and inspect rolled edges and the handle mechanism for trapped food particles. Air-dry all components completely, then re-assemble in nested configuration and verify secure before packing.
