The Rothco Deluxe 5-Piece Mess Kit is a self-contained cooking and eating system for one person, built from heavy-gauge polished aluminum. It supports boiling water, heating and rehydrating rations, simple frying, and serving a meal over a campfire or portable stove.

The kit contains five components: a frying pan with a stay-cool handle, a saucepan, a lid, a plate, and a plastic cup. All five pieces pack away together into one compact unit for transport in a pack, go-bag, or vehicle kit. The saucepan is the primary boiling vessel, the frying pan handles frying and searing, and the lid traps heat to shorten boil times and conserve fuel.

Aluminum heats quickly and evenly and keeps carry weight low, but it is softer than steel. It can dent under impact and can warp or scorch if heated empty or placed directly into hot coals. The kit will not work on induction cooktops. The plastic cup is the only non-metal component and must never be exposed to flame or a hot surface, as it will melt.

This kit is sized for single-operator meal preparation. Plan additional kits when feeding a group.

Field Application Steps

1. UNPACK AND INSPECT: Separate all five components: frying pan, saucepan, lid, plate, and plastic cup. Check each piece for dents, warping, or damage, and note the order they came out for repacking.

2. SECURE THE HANDLE: Ready the frying pan handle and confirm it is secure before the pan goes on the heat.

3. ISOLATE THE CUP: Set the plastic cup well away from the heat source before lighting a stove or fire.

4. ESTABLISH YOUR HEAT SOURCE: Set up a stove or managed campfire on a level, stable, non-flammable surface. Do not place the kit directly into hot coals or a large open fire.

5. BOIL WATER: Fill the saucepan with the water you need, leaving headspace. Cover it with the lid and bring it to a rolling boil. Never heat an empty aluminum vessel.

6. COOK: Place the frying pan on the heat with oil or food already in it and cook over a moderate flame. Keep the handle turned away from the flame.

7. SERVE: Transfer food to the plate. Let boiling water cool briefly before pouring it into the plastic cup. Use gloves or a pot holder on all metal pieces.

8. CLEAN AND REPACK: Allow all pieces to cool. Wash with minimal water and biodegradable soap, remove soot, and dry every piece completely. Repack all five into one unit and confirm the kit is secure and quiet before stowing.
