Quick Overview

The Rothco Aviator Sunglasses (58mm) are UV400-rated ocular protection eyewear designed to shield operators from solar radiation, reduce glare, and preserve visual acuity during vehicle operations, field deployments, and other non-ballistic duty environments.

The eyewear's 58mm acrylic lenses carry a UV400 rating, meaning they filter 100% of UVA and UVB rays. The large teardrop shape provides maximum surface area coverage, reducing peripheral light intrusion during extended exposure. The metal alloy frame delivers structural rigidity and deformation resistance, with a matte black finish that maintains a low visual signature profile. These components work together as a deployable visual protection system, not decorative gear.

Deployment protocol begins with retrieving the protective carrying case, extracting the eyewear, and conducting a rapid inspection for cracks, deep scratches, or frame damage before donning. Operators should clean lenses with a dedicated microfiber cloth only, wiping from center outward. Uniform fabric is prohibited during cleaning because it may carry abrasive particles that permanently damage acrylic lenses. Once donned, operators confirm function by assessing glare reduction and verifying no optical distortion is present.

This equipment is authorized exclusively for non-ballistic environments. It is not a substitute for ANSI Z87+ or MIL-PRF-32432 rated ballistic eye protection and will not defeat fragmentation, ricochets, or spall. Acrylic lenses are more susceptible to scratching than polycarbonate or glass, and contact with DEET-based repellents can permanently damage lens coatings. Equipment must be deemed unserviceable and removed from rotation if any crack, vision-obstructing scratch, bent frame, or broken hinge is present.

Field Application Steps

1. RETRIEVE THE CARRYING CASE: Remove the protective carrying case from its designated stow location, such as a pocket, pouch, or bag. The case is a critical component for maintaining equipment serviceability and must be kept accessible throughout the operational period.

2. EXTRACT AND INSPECT: Open the case and remove the sunglasses. Conduct a rapid visual inspection for deep scratches, cracks, heavy smudging, and frame or temple integrity before proceeding.

3. ASSESS SERVICEABILITY: Hold lenses up to a light source and check for cracks, delamination, or scratches within the primary field of vision. Inspect the metal frame for bends, hinge cracks, or signs of metal fatigue. If any unserviceable condition is present, do not deploy the equipment.

4. CLEAN LENSES IF REQUIRED: Use a dedicated microfiber cloth or approved lens wipe. Begin at the center of the lens and wipe outward. Do not use uniform fabric, as it may contain abrasive particles that permanently scratch acrylic lenses.

5. DON THE EYEWEAR: Position the eyewear on the face, seating the nose pads securely on the bridge of the nose. Slide the temples over and behind the ears. Confirm a stable, comfortable fit that prevents slippage during dynamic movement without creating pressure points.

6. CONFIRM FUNCTION: Assess the operational environment through the lenses. Verify that glare is significantly reduced, no optical distortion is present, and the field of view is not unacceptably obstructed before committing to the operational task.

7. STOW THE CARRYING CASE: Secure the empty protective case in a designated location so it remains available when conditions change and the eyewear needs to be stowed.
