Quick Overview

The Rothco 58mm Polarized Sunglasses are a field-ready, non-ballistic eyewear system designed to reduce glare-induced visual hazards and operator eye fatigue during vehicular, maritime, alpine, and general outdoor operations in high-sun environments.

The lenses deliver UV400 protection, blocking 100% of UVA and UVB solar radiation to prevent long-term corneal and retinal damage during prolonged exposure. The integrated polarization filter targets horizontally-oriented light waves, the primary source of surface glare from asphalt, water, and snow, improving visual contrast and reducing reaction time delays caused by temporary flash blindness. The metal frame with double bridge provides structural stability under field use, and spatula-style temples ensure positive retention during dynamic movement.

Deployment protocol requires a pre-mission inspection covering frame integrity, hinge function, lens condition, and cleanliness before donning. Operators must confirm fit by performing a sharp downward look and lateral head shake to verify the eyewear remains seated. Polarization interference with LCD screens, including GPS units and vehicle infotainment systems, must be verified against mission equipment prior to deployment, as described in Section 4.3.

This equipment is rated to MIL-STD-105 for basic impact resistance only and carries no ballistic protection rating. It is not a substitute for ANSI Z87.1+ or MIL-PRF-32432 rated eyewear in live-fire, fragmentation, or force-on-force environments. Use during low-light, dawn, dusk, or overcast conditions is prohibited, as tinted lenses severely restrict light transmission and degrade natural night vision.

Field Application Steps

1. EXTRACT AND INSPECT THE FRAME: Remove the sunglasses from the protective hard case. Check the frame for bends, cracks, or fatigue, and verify that hinge screws are secure and that both temples open and close smoothly.

2. INSPECT THE LENSES: Examine both lenses for deep scratches, chips, or coating delamination. Do not deploy the eyewear if significant lens damage is present, as compromised optics degrade visual acuity and protection.

3. CLEAN THE LENSES: Wipe lenses with a clean microfiber cloth using a center-outward motion. Do not use abrasive materials such as paper towels or uniform sleeves, which will scratch the polarized coating.

4. DON AND POSITION THE EYEWEAR: Grasp both temples and seat the nose pads comfortably on the bridge of your nose. Guide the spatula-style temples over and behind both ears until the frame is seated firmly.

5. CONFIRM FIT AND RETENTION: Look down sharply and shake your head side-to-side. The eyewear must remain firmly in place throughout this movement. A loose fit requires professional adjustment before the eyewear is mission-ready.

6. VERIFY OPTICAL ACUITY AND SCREEN COMPATIBILITY: Confirm that glare is significantly reduced and that your field of view is clear and unobstructed. Check all critical LCD-based mission equipment, including GPS units and vehicle infotainment screens, for polarization interference before proceeding.

7. DOFF THE EYEWEAR CORRECTLY: Grasp both temples simultaneously and pull forward to remove. Using one hand places uneven stress on the frame and accelerates hinge wear.

8. CONDUCT POST-USE CLEANING: Clean lenses of accumulated sweat, dust, and smudges before stowing. This maintains readiness for the next deployment and prevents contaminants from degrading the lens coating during storage.

9. STOW IN PROTECTIVE HARD CASE: Return the eyewear to the issued hard case and fully engage the snap closure. Store the case away from extreme temperatures and locations where it may be crushed, such as under loose cargo or on a vehicle dashboard.
