Quick Overview

The Rothco Elastic Ankle Holster is a deep concealment carry system designed for law enforcement, executive protection, and plainclothes operators who require a secure, low-profile method of carrying a sub-compact backup firearm when waistband carry is not viable.

The holster functions as a tertiary carry method, positioned on the inner ankle for cross-draw access. Its core components include a 5-inch elastic band with hook-and-loop closure, genuine sheep wool padding over the medial malleolus to prevent abrasion during extended wear, an elastic pocket for passive firearm retention, and a hook-and-loop webbing strap as an active retention device. A 1-inch plastic shirt stay clip anchors the assembly to the sock's upper hem, preventing downward migration during movement. The system is rated for sub-compact and pocket pistols only. Full-size or compact firearms will not seat securely and create a dislodgement hazard.

Deployment follows a strict sequence: the holster is donned from a seated position, the elastic band is secured snugly above the ankle without restricting circulation, the shirt stay clip is engaged to the sock hem, the cleared firearm is inserted and fully seated, and the retention strap is routed over the frame and fastened. Readiness confirmation requires a firm upward pull on the firearm to verify the retention strap is holding. The firearm is loaded only after all retention checks are complete and dry-practice proficiency is established.

Operators must account for this system's inherent tactical limitations. The draw stroke requires breaking stance, lowering the center of gravity, and potentially taking a knee, creating a moment of vulnerability that demands mitigation through repetitive dry-fire and live-fire training. The retention strap is user-dependent and must be inspected periodically throughout the duty period, particularly after physical exertion.

Field Application Steps

1. CLEAR AND RENDER THE FIREARM SAFE: Confirm the sub-compact firearm is unloaded and clear per your standard safety protocol before handling the holster system. No loaded firearm should be introduced to the holster until all donning and dry-practice steps are complete.

2. SELECT APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: Choose trousers with a leg opening wide enough to allow a clean, unobstructed draw stroke. Select socks that are tall and structurally robust enough to anchor the shirt stay clip at the upper hem.

3. POSITION THE HOLSTER ON THE ANKLE: Sit down and orient the holster on the inside of your left ankle for a right-handed cross-draw configuration. Verify that the sheep wool padding is seated directly over the medial malleolus, the inner ankle bone.

4. SECURE THE MAIN BODY: Wrap the elastic band snugly around the lower calf just above the ankle joint. Apply enough tension to prevent rotation during movement, but not so much as to restrict blood flow. Fasten the hook-and-loop closure to lock the band in place.

5. ENGAGE THE VERTICAL SUPPORT CLIP: Pull the top of your sock taut and fasten the 1-inch plastic shirt stay clip securely over the sock's upper hem. Tug the holster downward firmly to confirm the clip is engaged and the assembly will not migrate down the calf.

6. INSERT THE FIREARM: Slide the cleared sub-compact firearm into the elastic pocket with a firm, deliberate motion until it is fully seated. The pocket retains the firearm through passive elastic tension.

7. ENGAGE THE RETENTION STRAP: Route the hook-and-loop webbing strap over the rear of the firearm's frame or slide and fasten the tab securely. Pull the firearm upward with deliberate force to confirm the retention strap is holding it positively in place.

8. DON TROUSERS AND CONDUCT DRY-PRACTICE DRAW STROKE: Put on your trousers over the holstered system. From a standing position, bend at the knees and shift weight to your non-dominant leg. Use your support hand to clear the pant leg, then use your dominant thumb to defeat the retention strap and establish a firm firing grip. Repeat until the draw is smooth and repeatable.

9. CONDUCT POSITIONAL DRILLS: Repeat the full draw stroke from seated and kneeling positions to build muscle memory across the range of scenarios you may encounter during deployment. Do not proceed to a live firearm until all positional draws are consistent.

10. LOAD AND MAKE READY: Once dry-practice proficiency is confirmed, load the firearm per your agency's protocol. Load only after the firearm is fully and securely holstered with the retention strap engaged.
