Quick Overview

The Rothco ANSI Z87-1 Tactical Goggles are certified eye protection designed for operators conducting live-fire training, vehicle operations, force-on-force simulation, and general field use requiring reliable defense against high-velocity impact, UV radiation, and airborne particulates.

The goggle's primary protective component is a 2.2mm polycarbonate lens engineered to meet ANSI Z87-1 certification, capable of absorbing and deflecting energy from high-velocity impacts, ricochets, and ejected casings. The flexible, low-profile frame maximizes field of view and maintains compatibility with helmets and other headborne systems. Internal anti-fog coating preserves clear line of sight during high-exertion operations and rapid temperature transitions, while an external anti-scratch coating extends lens service life under field conditions.

Operator retention and seal integrity are managed through a continuous soft foam lining that creates a particulate barrier against the orbital bones and forehead, combined with an adjustable elastic headband that accommodates deployment over hats, beanies, or bare head. UV400 protection is integrated directly into the lens material, blocking both UVA and UVB radiation during prolonged outdoor operations. Fit should be firm but not constricting, as over-tightening breaks the facial seal and reduces protective capability.

These goggles are not rated for primary ballistic protection against firearm projectiles, CBRN environments, chemical splash hazards, or firefighting operations requiring NFPA compliance. Any lens that is cracked, deeply scratched, or has sustained a significant impact has lost its protective rating and must be removed from service immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT LENS INSPECTION: Hold the goggles to a light source and inspect the polycarbonate lens for deep scratches, cracks, or deformities. Minor surface scratches on the coating are acceptable; any damage to the lens material itself is not, and the goggle must be removed from service.

2. FOAM AND STRAP INSPECTION: Inspect the foam lining for full attachment, significant tears, or compressed sections that would break the facial seal. Check the elastic headband for adequate elasticity, fraying, and buckle function before donning.

3. PRE-LOOSEN THE HEADBAND: Loosen the adjustment buckles on the elastic headband before placing the goggle on your face. This prevents distortion of the frame and allows for proper seating without tension interference.

4. DON AND SEAT THE GOGGLE: Place the goggle over the eyes, pressing the foam lining firmly against the orbital bones and forehead. Confirm there are no major gaps in the seal around the perimeter of the frame.

5. POSITION AND SECURE THE HEADBAND: Pass the headband over the head and position it horizontally above the ears. Tighten the adjustment buckles until the fit is firm and stable. Do not over-tighten, as excess tension causes discomfort and breaks the facial seal.

6. CONDUCT OPERATIONAL CHECKS: Confirm an unobstructed field of view and verify peripheral vision is clear. If wearing with a helmet or other headgear, ensure the goggle frame and strap do not interfere with the fit or function of that equipment.

7. DOFF WITH CONTROLLED TENSION: Loosen the headband before removing the goggle to reduce stress on the straps and buckles. Pull the goggle up and away from the face rather than pulling it forward off the nose.

8. CLEAN AND STOW: Before storing, dislodge heavy debris by rinsing with clean water. Use only a dedicated microfiber cloth or approved lens cleaning towelette, wiping in a gentle circular motion without heavy pressure. Allow the goggle to air dry completely, then store in a protective case or soft pouch in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and chemical exposure.
