Quick Overview

The Rothco Waterproof Backpack Cover is a field-deployable rain cover constructed from 210D PU-coated ripstop fabric that protects mission-critical gear from rain, snow, and heavy mist during tactical operations, long-range patrols, and wilderness travel.

The cover's primary barrier is its 210 Denier polyester shell with a Polyurethane coating that actively repels water ingress. The ripstop weave arrests tears and punctures before they compromise the barrier, a critical capability when moving through dense vegetation or abrasive terrain. Pack saturation without protection can increase operator load by several pounds, accelerate hypothermia risk through moisture transfer to clothing, and render electronics and communication equipment non-operational.

Securement is achieved through two systems working in sequence. The elastic cinch cord draws the cover's perimeter tight against the pack frame, creating an initial seal. The hook-and-loop retention strap then anchors the cover across the back panel, preventing inflation or dislodgment in high-wind environments. An integrated bottom grommet provides passive drainage, preventing moisture from pooling at the pack's base. The cover is available in configurations compatible with packs up to 60L or 90L.

Sustained readiness requires pre-mission inspection of the PU coating for delamination, verification of cinch cord elasticity, and confirmation that the drainage grommet is unobstructed. The cover must never be stored wet, as prolonged moisture exposure degrades the PU coating and promotes mildew. Cleaning is limited to a damp cloth with cool water, as detergents and high heat will strip the waterproofing layer.

Field Application Steps

1. ACCESS THE STORAGE POUCH: Maintain forward momentum if tactically required. With one hand, access the designated exterior pocket of your primary pack and retrieve the integrated 9-inch by 7-inch storage pouch.

2. EXTRACT THE COVER: Pull the cover fully out of the pouch. Do not discard or separate the pouch, as it is permanently attached to the cover.

3. ORIENT THE COVER: Identify the top and bottom of the cover before application. The integrated bottom grommet is the definitive indicator for the base of the cover.

4. APPLY THE COVER: Starting from the top of the backpack, drape the cover over the entire pack body. Ensure it extends over all external pockets and attachments as completely as possible.

5. ENGAGE PRIMARY SECUREMENT: Locate the elastic cinch cord along the cover's perimeter. Pull firmly until the cover's edge is snug against the pack frame and body, then engage the cord lock to maintain tension.

6. ENGAGE SECONDARY SECUREMENT: Pass the hook-and-loop retention strap around the pack body or through the shoulder strap anchor points on the back panel. Secure tightly. This step is critical in high-wind environments to prevent parasail inflation or dislodgment during movement.

7. EXECUTE FINAL CHECK: Confirm the cover is not snagged on any attachment or frame component. Verify the grommet is positioned at the lowest point and is unobstructed. Confirm the retention strap is fully secured and that the cover does not impede access to immediate-action gear such as your primary weapon or IFAK.
