Quick Overview

Rothco Military Camouflage Netting is a reversible rip-stop polyester concealment system used by operators to reduce the visual signature of personnel, vehicles, equipment, and fixed positions in field environments where detection must be actively defeated.

The system's primary capability is static visual concealment achieved by disrupting silhouettes, blending with the natural background, and eliminating glare. The reversible fabric presents a woodland green-dominant side for lush, vegetated terrain and a brown-dominant side for arid, drought-stricken, or late-autumn environments. All attachment points, including cordage, stakes, and poles, must connect to the reinforced mesh backing only. Attaching to the fabric layer will cause tearing and premature failure.

Effective deployment depends on three sequential phases: site assessment and pattern selection, erection and perimeter securing, and garnishing with local natural materials. The net must never be pulled taut. A flat, taut surface creates unnatural geometry that degrades concealment. Weaving local vegetation into the mesh backing, a process known as garnishing or ghilling, is the critical final step that adapts the manufactured pattern to the immediate environment and eliminates hard edges.

Critical limitations govern safe use. The polyester construction is not fire retardant and will melt rapidly near open flame. The system is not load-bearing, will fail under accumulated snow or heavy rain, and provides zero thermal or infrared signature reduction. Pre- and post-deployment inspection of fabric integrity, mesh backing condition, and foreign material buildup is the single most effective protocol for extending operational readiness.

Field Application Steps

1. CONDUCT SITE SURVEY: Move to likely observer positions and assess the area from 360 degrees. Identify dominant background colors, textures, and light patterns before selecting your concealment approach.

2. SELECT CORRECT PATTERN SIDE: Orient the reversible fabric with the woodland green-dominant side facing out in lush, vegetated environments. Use the brown-dominant side in arid, drought-stricken, or late-autumn terrain. When in doubt, default to the darker pattern.

3. UNPACK AND ORIENT THE NET: Carefully unfold the net on the ground to prevent snagging. Align the longest axis of the net to the required coverage area before raising it.

4. ESTABLISH HIGH POINTS AND RUN RIDGELINE: Identify natural anchor points such as trees or large rocks, or use support poles. For a hasty observation post, run a cordage ridgeline between two trees to serve as the primary suspension point.

5. DRAPE AND MAINTAIN SLACK: Hoist and drape the net over the ridgeline. Do not pull the net taut. The net must retain loose, irregular shape to create natural-looking shadows and avoid producing a flat, easily identifiable surface.

6. SECURE THE PERIMETER TO MESH BACKING ONLY: Anchor all edges and corners using stakes or low vegetation. Run all cordage through the reinforced mesh backing, never through the fabric layer. Prevent wind displacement while preserving the loose, irregular drape.

7. GARNISH WITH LOCAL NATURAL MATERIALS: Weave fallen leaves, small branches, and clumps of grass into the mesh backing. Concentrate garnishing on edges and any areas where hard, straight lines are visible. The transition from natural environment to net must be seamless.

8. CONDUCT FINAL INSPECTION FROM DISTANCE: Move 50 to 75 meters away from the position and view it from multiple angles. Look for unnatural shapes, color mismatches, and hard edges. Adjust draping and garnishing until the position is indistinguishable from the surrounding environment.
