Quick Overview

The Rothco Stainless Steel Canteen Cup and Cover Set is a heavy-gauge stainless steel field cooking system used by operators to boil water for purification, reconstitute dehydrated meals, and prepare hot beverages in austere environments without access to conventional cooking facilities.

The system consists of three components, each with a defined operational role. The kidney-shaped cup body nests directly around a standard 1-Quart G.I. canteen, minimizing loadout space while maintaining full cooking capability. The flat stainless steel cover retains heat to reduce boil time, blocks environmental contaminants including debris and insects, and minimizes spillage during movement. The butterfly handle provides the primary user interface when the cup is at temperature, deploying outward to form a rigid grip clear of the hot body and folding flush for stowage.

Deployment follows a four-phase protocol covering preparation, heating, handling and recovery, and stowage. During the heating phase, the cover must rest loosely on the cup to allow steam to vent freely. Water purification requires a sustained rolling boil of at least one minute at standard elevations. At altitudes above 6,500 feet, that requirement increases to a minimum of three full minutes to ensure biological safety against active pathogens.

Sustainment readiness depends on consistent pre-operation inspection and proper field cleaning. Before each deployment, operators verify the cup body and lid for cracks, warping, or deep pitting, confirm the butterfly handle hinges are intact and the arms lock securely, and ensure the cup nests to the canteen without binding. In the field, sand or fine gravel serves as an effective abrasive cleaning agent when soap is unavailable.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT A FIRE-SAFE SITE: Identify a stable, level surface clear of flammable ground debris for your heat source. Approved heat sources include a field stove, a flat rock for fuel tabs, or a prepared coal bed.

2. DEPLOY THE BUTTERFLY HANDLE: Remove the canteen cup from your pack or canteen carrier. Unfold the butterfly handle arms, swing them fully outward, and clip them together to form a rigid handle away from the cup body.

3. FILL THE CUP: Fill the cup with water or your intended contents, leaving at least one inch of headspace at the top to prevent boiling over. If reconstituting a dehydrated meal, add food at this stage.

4. POSITION ON HEAT SOURCE: Place the filled cup securely on the heat source and confirm it is stable and not at risk of tipping before proceeding.

5. PLACE THE COVER: Set the cover loosely on top of the cup. Do not force a tight seal. The cover must be able to vent steam freely throughout the heating process.

6. ACHIEVE AND HOLD A ROLLING BOIL: Apply heat until a full, rolling boil is achieved. For water purification at standard elevation, maintain the rolling boil for a minimum of one full minute. At altitudes above 6,500 feet (2,000 meters), maintain the rolling boil for a minimum of three full minutes.

7. DON PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Before handling any component of the heated system, don heat-resistant gloves if available. Treat all metal components, including the butterfly handle, as dangerously hot.

8. REMOVE FROM HEAT: Firmly grasp the deployed butterfly handle and lift the cup straight up and away from the heat source using controlled, deliberate movement. Set the cup on a stable, non-flammable surface.

9. ACCESS CONTENTS: Use a tool or gloved hand to carefully remove the hot lid. Be prepared for escaping steam when breaking the seal. Contents are now ready for consumption or use.

10. COOL BEFORE CLEANING: Allow both the cup and cover to cool completely before cleaning or stowing. Do not pour cool water onto hot stainless steel, as thermal shock can cause warping.

11. CLEAN THE SYSTEM: Clean the interior and exterior of the cup and lid. In the absence of soap, use sand or fine gravel as an abrasive scrub followed by a thorough rinse with clean water. Upon return to garrison, clean with hot soapy water.

12. DRY AND STOW: Dry all components completely. Fold the butterfly handle flush against the cup body, nest the cup onto your G.I. canteen, place the cover, and secure the system in its carrier.
