Quick Overview

The Rothco Canvas Map Case Shoulder Bag is a field-ready administrative and navigation tool carrier used by field personnel to protect maps, operational documents, and small tablets while maintaining organized, immediate access to mission-essential tools during active deployment.

The bag's capability is built around two core systems working together. An integrated hardboard stiffener sewn into the rear panel creates a rigid backplane that prevents documents and maps from crumpling during transit and doubles as a stable writing surface in the field. The heavyweight cotton canvas body provides abrasion resistance and moderate water repellency against light precipitation, though it is not waterproof. For any mission involving electronics or paper documents in moderate to heavy rain, a dedicated waterproof case must be staged inside the map case.

The front administrative pocket organizes ten elastic retention loops for pens, markers, chem lights, and small flashlights, plus two wider canvas slots sized for a lensatic compass, GPS unit, or small field notebook. The main compartment includes an internal divider, keeping sensitive electronics against the stiffener and secondary documents in the front section. The dual snap closure system provides positive flap retention during dynamic movement, though it does not create an environmental seal against sand, dust, or water.

The detachable shoulder strap adjusts to a maximum of 42 inches, supporting cross-body or over-shoulder carry. Operators wearing plate carriers or bulky outerwear should verify fit prior to deployment, as strap length may be insufficient for larger-statured individuals or heavy layering configurations.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-MISSION INSPECTION: Visually and manually inspect all stitching, particularly at shoulder strap attachment points. Verify the hardboard stiffener is not cracked or broken, test both snap closures for positive retention, and check all ten elastic loops for adequate elasticity.

2. CONFIGURE THE MAIN COMPARTMENT: Place your primary tablet or laminated map flush against the internal hardboard stiffener in the rear section of the main compartment for maximum stability and impact protection. Use the internal divider to separate the primary device or map from secondary items such as a protocol book or field guide to prevent surface damage.

3. LOAD THE ADMINISTRATIVE POCKET: Stage primary and secondary writing implements in the most accessible elastic retention loops. Secure your compass or GPS unit in one of the two wider canvas slots. Place a small flashlight or chem light in an outer loop for immediate access in low-light conditions. Confirm all loaded tools clear the main flap before closing.

4. PROTECT MOISTURE-SENSITIVE CONTENTS: Store any mission-critical electronics and paper documents inside a dedicated waterproof bag or case before placing them in the map case. Canvas provides water resistance against light precipitation only. Moisture will penetrate in moderate to heavy rain or high-humidity environments.

5. ADJUST STRAP AND ESTABLISH CARRY POSITION: Attach and adjust the shoulder strap for a snug fit across the body, running from the non-dominant shoulder to the dominant-side hip. Position the bag high on the hip or lower back to minimize swing and bouncing during dynamic movement and prevent interference with belt-line equipment.

6. ACCESS CONTENTS IN THE FIELD: Rotate the bag to your front for access. The snap closures are designed for one-handed operation. Use the rigid back panel as a makeshift field desk when marking maps or referencing documents under field conditions.

7. RESECURE AFTER EVERY ACCESS: Engage both dual snap closures completely after each access to prevent loss of contents during movement. Do not rely on the closure system to retain small, loose items that could fall out from the sides of the bag.

8. POST-MISSION CLEANING AND STORAGE: Brush dry debris from the canvas with a stiff brush. Address stains with a damp cloth and mild soap solution. Do not machine wash or machine dry, as both will permanently damage the hardboard stiffener and may shrink or deform the canvas body. Air dry completely before storing in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight.
