Quick Overview

Rothco Cold Weather Military Gloves are a multi-layer thermal protection system designed for tactical operators, search and rescue personnel, and field teams who must maintain hand function and equipment control during cold-to-extreme cold and wet weather operations.

The glove system is built around three integrated subsystems working in sequence. The High-Denier Nylon Shell and Internal Waterproof Bladder form the outer environmental barrier, blocking wind, rain, snow, and ice melt while venting internal moisture vapor to prevent sweat accumulation. The Thermoblock insulation layer and Tricot lining handle thermal regulation from the inside, trapping body-warmed air and wicking moisture away from the skin to eliminate conductive heat loss.

Operator interface is managed through reinforced leather palms and fingers for secure grip on tools and equipment in icy or wet conditions, adjustable wrist straps that seal against element intrusion, and an integrated hook clip for secure stowage and immediate re-deployment readiness when gloves must be removed for fine-motor tasks.

Operators must understand the system's limits before deployment. These gloves are a passive insulation system: they slow heat loss but do not generate heat. The outer shell can freeze in sub-zero temperatures if fully saturated, degrading flexibility. The nylon and synthetic construction provides zero fire resistance. In extended static operations at extreme cold, active circulation through movement and monitoring for frostnip remain the operator's responsibility regardless of glove performance.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually inspect the exterior of both gloves for rips, tears, and seam failures. Examine leather palms and fingers for cracks, holes, or excessive wear that would compromise grip or weather protection.

2. VERIFY HARDWARE FUNCTION: Confirm the adjustable wrist strap cinching mechanism operates correctly on both gloves. Engage and disengage the integrated hook clip to verify it is functional and will hold the pair securely under field conditions.

3. ENSURE DRY HANDS BEFORE DONNING: Dry hands completely before putting on the gloves. Moisture between skin and lining reduces thermal efficiency from the first moment of wear.

4. SEAT FINGERS FULLY: Slide each hand in completely, ensuring every finger is fully seated within its finger box. Partial seating degrades control and reduces the insulation envelope around the fingers.

5. LAYER THE GAUNTLET OVER YOUR CUFF: Pull the gauntlet section over the cuff of your duty jacket. This layered configuration is the primary barrier against wind, snow, and cold air entering at the wrist.

6. ADJUST AND SEAL THE WRIST STRAP: Tighten the wrist strap to create a firm seal against element intrusion. The fit must be snug enough to close the system, but must not restrict blood circulation to the hand.

7. MANAGE TRANSITIONS TO BARE-HAND TASKS: When fine motor tasks require glove removal, doff both gloves and immediately secure them using the integrated hook clip. Attach the clipped pair to your belt or pack to prevent loss and maintain immediate re-deployment readiness.

8. MONITOR FOR COLD INJURY DURING STATIC OPERATIONS: During extended low-activity periods, actively maintain circulation through movement. Check extremities regularly for numbness or whitening, the early indicators of frostnip, as the passive insulation system cannot indefinitely prevent cold injury without operator action.

9. POST-MISSION CLEANING: Remove surface dirt with a brush. If deeper cleaning is required, hand wash with mild detergent in lukewarm water. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners, as both degrade the waterproof bladder and insulating materials.

10. DRY CORRECTLY: Gently squeeze excess water from fingertips down toward the cuff. Do not wring or twist. Air dry at room temperature, upright or hung from the cuffs, away from radiators, fire, and direct sunlight.

11. CONDITION LEATHER AND STORE: Apply leather conditioner to the palms and fingers periodically, especially after wet use, to maintain flexibility and prevent cracking. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area and avoid compressing the gloves under heavy gear, which permanently reduces insulation loft.
