Quick Overview

The Rothco Concealed Carry Backwoods Canvas Vest is a heavyweight cotton canvas concealment garment used by licensed civilians, plainclothes operators, and outdoor professionals to carry a medium-to-large frame handgun with integrated magazine storage in cool to cold environments.

The vest functions as a complete concealment system built around two ambidextrous interior CCW pockets with hook-and-loop retention and two adjacent internal magazine pouches. Its 12oz cotton canvas outer shell provides significant abrasion resistance and inherent stiffness that mitigates firearm printing, while the diamond-quilted polyester liner delivers thermal protection without excessive bulk. A heavy-duty 2-way zipper enables both standard top-down donning and a bottom-up rapid access draw stroke, making the system viable from seated and standing positions.

Deployment protocol follows a five-step sequence covering weapon staging, garment configuration, standard draw stroke, rapid-access seated draw stroke, and re-holstering. Re-holstering is the highest-risk action in the system because the padded pockets do not provide rigid trigger guard protection. Operators carrying firearms without an external manual safety are directed to augment the pocket with a minimalist Kydex trigger guard cover tethered to the vest interior.

Readiness sustainment requires pre-use and post-use inspection of stitching, zippers, hook-and-loop closures, and pocket integrity before every deployment. The vest and firearm are integrated only immediately prior to operational use. Loaded firearms are never stored inside the vest during transport or storage.

Field Application Steps

1. WEAPON AND MAGAZINE STAGING: Verify the firearm is unloaded before handling the vest. Insert the firearm into the appropriate interior CCW pocket on the strong side, seating the muzzle fully into the bottom of the pocket, then secure loaded magazines in the adjacent internal pouches.

2. GARMENT CONFIGURATION AND PRINT CHECK: Don the vest and zip it fully from bottom to top. Conduct a self-assessment for printing from multiple angles using a mirror, adjust equipment as needed, and confirm the 2-way zipper is fully seated at the bottom for proper function.

3. DRAW STROKE, STANDARD (STANDING): With the support hand, grasp the primary zipper pull and pull it downward forcefully to clear a path to the grip. With the strong hand, achieve a full master grip, defeat the hook-and-loop retention, and execute the draw stroke.

4. DRAW STROKE, RAPID ACCESS (SEATED OR STANDING): With the support hand, grasp the bottom zipper pull and rip it upward approximately 6 to 8 inches to expose the grip from below. Achieve a master grip and complete the draw stroke. This method is faster and more efficient when seated in a vehicle.

5. RE-HOLSTERING PROCEDURE: Stop and visually inspect the CCW pocket opening to confirm it is not collapsed and is free of foreign objects. Keep the trigger finger indexed high along the frame, carefully guide the muzzle into the pocket, fully seat the firearm, and secure the hook-and-loop retention flap.

6. POST-USE INSPECTION: Inspect all stitching around the interior CCW and magazine pockets for stretching, fraying, or seam separation. Operate both zippers along their full length of travel, check all hook-and-loop surfaces and snap closures for lint or debris, and clear the CCW pocket of any obstructions before the next use.

7. MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE: Remove all equipment from pockets before laundering and follow the manufacturer's care label. Avoid fabric softeners or harsh chemicals that could degrade the canvas. Store the vest on a heavy-duty hanger to maintain shape and prevent permanent creases, with the firearm cleared and stored separately.
