2. VERIFY COMPONENT READINESS: Inspect the zinc alloy case for cracks or structural damage. Confirm the sighting wire is straight and the lensatic sight is neither cracked nor fogged. Verify the bubble level is intact and all degree markings on the azimuth ring are fully legible.
3. ORIENT THE MAP: Place the map on a level surface and align the side ruler with a North-South grid line. Rotate the map and compass together until the fluorescent North arrow aligns with the N mark at 360 degrees. Apply the magnetic declination value printed on your map before proceeding.
4. DETERMINE YOUR MAGNETIC AZIMUTH: Keep the map oriented. Position the compass so the side ruler forms a straight line from your current position to your destination, with the sighting wire pointing in the direction of travel. Read the bearing through the lensatic sight. This value, for example 65 degrees, is your magnetic azimuth for the leg.
5. FOLLOW THE BEARING IN THE FIELD: Hold the compass level at chest or eye height and confirm horizontal orientation using the bubble level. Rotate your body until the North arrow aligns with N and your target bearing is visible through the lensatic sight. Align the sighting wire with a distinct, distant landmark along that bearing and move to it. Repeat the process at each landmark until you reach your destination.
6. APPLY DECLINATION CORRECTLY: Understand that this compass reads Magnetic North, not True North. The angular difference between the two, called declination, varies by location and changes over time. Obtain the current declination value for your area of operations from your topographic map or a current declination resource, and apply it to every bearing before moving.
7. MAINTAIN STANDOFF FROM INTERFERENCE SOURCES: Keep the compass at least 55 meters from high-tension power lines, 18 meters from vehicles or large metal structures, 10 meters from telephone lines, and 2 meters from small metal objects such as rifles or steel canteens. Ferrous metals and electrical fields will produce false readings without visible indication of error.
8. USE THE CLINOMETER FOR SLOPE ASSESSMENT: Open the compass fully and hold it sideways with the top edge aligned along the slope angle you are measuring. Read the inclination scale to obtain the vertical angle. Note that the clinometer is a field-expedient tool and is not a substitute for professional training or dedicated instrumentation when making life-safety decisions such as avalanche terrain evaluation.
9. MEASURE MAP DISTANCES USING THE SIDE RULER: Place the side ruler against the map's scale bar to measure the distance of each navigation leg. Convert the map measurement to real-world distance using the declared scale, for example 1:24,000, to plan pace count or timing before moving.
10. CLEAN AND STORE THE COMPASS CORRECTLY: After each operation, wipe the compass with a soft, damp cloth only. Do not use chemical solvents, which will damage the plastic housing, dial markings, and lens. Store the compass closed and secured in a cool, dry location away from strong magnets, speakers, electric motors, and electrical currents. Prolonged magnetic field exposure can weaken or reverse needle polarity and render the instrument unserviceable.
