Quick Overview

Rothco Double Lock Steel Handcuffs are a professional-grade temporary restraint tool used by law enforcement, correctional officers, and licensed security personnel to safely restrict subject movement and prevent escape, weapon access, or assault.

The handcuffs are built around a ratchet arm and pawl-and-teeth mechanism that allows one-way tightening without a key, ensuring secure application under field conditions. The 1.8mm steel body resists tampering, bending, and breakage under significant physical stress, while the nickel or black corrosion-resistant finish protects mechanical reliability against moisture, humidity, and biological contact. The welded chain links provide flexible connection between bracelets while limiting effective resistance from a subject.

The double lock activator is the primary safety feature of this restraint system. Once engaged using the pin end of the handcuff key, it prevents further tightening of the ratchet arm, directly mitigating the risk of nerve damage, circulatory compromise, and fractures. Engaging the double lock is a mandatory, immediate action step following every application, and failure to do so creates both injury risk and legal liability for the operator and their agency.

Proper deployment follows a sequential protocol: stage the cuffs for rapid application, position the subject with hands behind the back, apply each cuff just below the wrist bone, verify fit using the one-finger field check, and engage the double lock on both cuffs immediately. Restrained subjects require continuous visual monitoring, and operators must transition subjects out of the prone position as soon as tactically feasible to eliminate positional asphyxia risk.

Field Application Steps

1. STAGE YOUR CUFFS: Draw the handcuffs and hold them in your non-dominant hand with the single ratchet arms facing outward so they swing freely. Maintain your tactical advantage throughout the approach.

2. POSITION THE SUBJECT: Direct the subject to prone, kneeling, or standing with hands placed behind their back. Standard positioning is palms outward or thumbs up to facilitate controlled cuff application.

3. APPLY THE FIRST CUFF: Secure the near hand. In a single fluid motion, push the ratchet arm against the subject's wrist so it swings through and engages the lock, positioned just below the wrist bone.

4. APPLY THE SECOND CUFF: While maintaining control of the already-cuffed hand, bring the subject's second hand into position and apply the second cuff using the same technique.

5. CHECK FOR PROPER FIT: Immediately verify tightness on both cuffs. Field standard: you should be able to insert just the tip of your index finger between the cuff bracelet and the subject's wrist on both sides.

6. ENGAGE THE DOUBLE LOCK: This is a mandatory, immediate action step. Use the pin end of the handcuff key to depress the double lock activator on both cuffs. Pull and push the ratchet arm on each cuff to confirm it will not tighten further.

7. MONITOR THE SUBJECT: Transition the subject out of the prone position to seated or recovery as soon as tactically feasible to eliminate positional asphyxia risk. Maintain continuous visual monitoring and check regularly for signs of medical distress, circulation compromise, or tampering attempts.

8. EXECUTE CONTROLLED REMOVAL: Maintain physical control of the subject throughout removal. Unlock the double lock first by turning the key in the reverse direction, then disengage the primary lock. Control the removed cuff and the subject's free hand before removing the second cuff.
