Quick Overview

The Rothco EMS Rescue Vest is a high-visibility, load-bearing safety vest designed for EMS, paramedicine, fire-rescue, and event medical personnel operating in ANSI/ISEA 107-2010 Class 2 environments where conspicuity and equipment access are mission-critical.

The vest delivers three core capabilities in a single deployable garment: conspicuity, anti-entanglement, and equipment organization. Its fluorescent polyester mesh chassis provides daytime visibility, while 2-inch silver reflective tape delivers 360-degree retroreflectivity in low-light and nighttime conditions. A clear ID holder on the chest enables rapid, non-verbal role identification by incident command, law enforcement, and adjacent personnel on complex scenes.

The 5-point breakaway system is the vest's primary protective mechanism. Five hook-and-loop closures positioned at the shoulders, sides, and front closure are engineered to release under sufficient force, freeing the operator from vehicle or machinery snag hazards. Proper fit is critical to this system's function. A vest that is too loose or too tight will not break away as designed, which is why fit adjustment is a required step in the pre-deployment protocol.

Operators should understand the vest's defined limits before field deployment. It is rated for traffic environments with speeds between 25 and 50 MPH and does not meet ANSI Class 3 requirements for higher-speed or complex-background environments. It provides no flame resistance, ballistic protection, or chemical barrier capability. Unauthorized modifications, including patches or gear attachments that obstruct reflective tape or impede breakaway points, void the ANSI rating and compromise operator safety.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT ALL FIVE BREAKAWAY POINTS: Visually and physically check each hook-and-loop closure at both shoulders, both sides, and the front. Clear any dirt, mud, or debris that could prevent proper release under field conditions.

2. DON THE VEST AS THE OUTERMOST GARMENT: Place the vest over your duty uniform or outerwear. The vest must remain the outermost layer at all times to maintain full ANSI Class 2 visibility compliance.

3. SECURE THE FRONT CLOSURE: Fasten the front hook-and-loop closure fully and confirm it is centered on your chest before adjusting fit.

4. ADJUST FIT USING SIDE CLOSURES: Set the side closures to achieve a snug fit that allows full range of motion without excessive shifting. Proper fit is the operational prerequisite for the breakaway system to function as designed.

5. STAGE AND SEAT ALL TOOLS: Insert trauma shears into the reinforced shears pocket and a penlight into the dedicated narrow pocket. Confirm each tool is fully seated and retrievable with one hand.

6. INSERT AGENCY OR INCIDENT ID: Place your identification into the clear chest pocket with the face fully visible. This enables non-verbal role identification by incident command and law enforcement without requiring operator interaction.

7. INTEGRATE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS: Clip your radio speaker-microphone to one of the two dual mic tabs on the upper chest or shoulder. Route the cord under the tab or through a designated channel to eliminate it as a secondary snag hazard.

8. CONDUCT FINAL APPARATUS EGRESS CHECK: Upon exiting the vehicle, verify the vest is fully secure and confirm no portion is snagged on the apparatus before moving into the operational area.

9. EXECUTE POST-BREAKAWAY REASSEMBLY CORRECTLY: If the vest separates, move to a position of safety before attempting reassembly. Retrieve all vest sections, re-align and press each of the five hook-and-loop points until fully secured, then conduct a function check before re-engaging in operations.

10. INSPECT AND MAINTAIN ON A SHIFT-BY-SHIFT BASIS: At the start of each shift, check the mesh for rips or burns, inspect reflective tape for cracking or delamination, test hook-and-loop fasteners for secure hold, and examine all pocket stitching for integrity. Remove the vest from service if any component fails inspection.
