Quick Overview

The Rothco 22-inch EMT Bag is a professional-grade mobile medical supply platform used by first responders, EMS personnel, and trained operators to organize, transport, and deploy Basic Life Support and trauma management equipment in emergency scenarios.

The bag's multi-compartment architecture is designed around systematic deployment protocols, not convenience. The main compartment measures 12 by 8 by 11 inches and accommodates bulky essentials such as BVMs, cervical collars, and splinting materials. Two full-length side zippered compartments support dedicated Airway/Breathing and Circulation/Bleeding loadouts, while hook-and-loop front pouches provide rapid access to high-frequency items. The rear 6-loop MOLLE-style bandolier and front D-rings extend external attachment capability for tools requiring immediate field access.

Structural readiness depends on understanding the bag's environmental limits. The 600 Denier polyester body with PVC internal coating provides water resistance against light rain and fluid spills, but is not rated for submersion or sustained heavy rain. Zippers are the primary mechanical failure point and must never be forced closed under excessive load. Sharp, heavy, or angular items can abrade or puncture the fabric from the interior and should not be included in the loadout.

Sustainment protocol requires a full inspection at the start of each operational period and after every deployment. Inspection covers handles, straps, zippers, fabric integrity, and all hardware. Contents must be inventoried against the agency's standardized load list, with all expiration dates verified and sterile packaging confirmed intact. After any fluid exposure, the bag must be removed from service and decontaminated per bloodborne pathogen protocols before restocking.

Field Application Steps

1. BUILD YOUR LOAD PLAN USING THE MARCH ALGORITHM: Assign each compartment a functional role before placing a single item. Massive hemorrhage supplies go in one exterior side pocket, Airway and Respiration supplies in the other, Circulation and IV supplies in the front pocket, and Head Injury or Hypothermia supplies in the main compartment.

2. LOAD BULKY ITEMS INTO THE MAIN COMPARTMENT FIRST: Place large, less frequently accessed items such as the BVM, cervical collars, and splints into the 12 by 8 by 11 inch main compartment before smaller items. Use the removable internal hook-and-loop divider to stabilize the load and create dedicated zones.

3. STAGE HIGH-FREQUENCY ITEMS IN EXTERIOR ACCESS POINTS: Place gloves, trauma shears, and tourniquets in the most accessible external pouches, hook-and-loop front pouches, or bandolier loops. This prevents opening major compartments during initial patient contact when seconds matter.

4. SELECT YOUR CARRY METHOD BASED ON TERRAIN AND DISTANCE: Use the reinforced top carry handles for short, rapid movement to the patient's side. Deploy the adjustable shoulder strap when navigating debris, uneven terrain, or when carrying additional equipment in your hands.

5. STAGE THE BAG ON A CLEAN, FLAT SURFACE AT THE SCENE: Place the bag on a stable surface clear of mud, standing water, and glass before opening. A compromised staging surface risks contaminating supplies and destabilizing your workstation.

6. OPEN THE U-SHAPED TOP ZIPPER COMPLETELY TO CREATE YOUR WORKSTATION: Unzip the top flap fully to convert the bag from a transport configuration to an organized workstation. This action presents all main compartment contents simultaneously without requiring you to excavate supplies under pressure.

7. FOLLOW SEQUENTIAL ACCESS DISCIPLINE: Address immediate life threats by drawing from exterior pockets first, specifically massive hemorrhage control supplies, before opening the main compartment for secondary interventions. This preserves organization and reduces time to treatment.

8. ENFORCE CONTAMINATION CONTROL THROUGHOUT THE ENCOUNTER: Do not return soiled or used equipment to the clean bag under any circumstances. Designate a separate dirty area for used wrappers, bloodied supplies, and opened packaging before treatment begins.

9. CONDUCT FULL INSPECTION AND INVENTORY BEFORE RETURNING TO SERVICE: After every deployment, pull-test all handles and the shoulder strap, cycle every zipper, and visually inspect all fabric surfaces and hardware. Conduct a 100 percent inventory check against your standardized load list and verify expiration dates on all sterile and dated items.

10. DECONTAMINATE BEFORE RESTOCKING AFTER ANY FLUID EXPOSURE: If the bag was exposed to blood or other biohazardous fluids, remove it from service immediately. Apply an approved CaviCide or bleach-based solution per your agency's bloodborne pathogen protocol, then allow the bag to air dry completely before restocking to prevent mold and mildew growth.
