Quick Overview

The Rothco Firetec Interchangeable Sport Glass system is a multi-lens eye protection platform used by operators across shooting sports, hunting, cycling, and tactical training to adapt visual protection to changing ambient light and operational conditions without carrying multiple single-purpose eyewear units.

The system is built around a lightweight black nylon frame that accepts three interchangeable polycarbonate lenses, each rated UV400 to block both UVA and UVB radiation. The smoke lens is deployed in bright sunlight and high-glare environments to reduce eye strain and improve visual acuity. The yellow lens enhances contrast and depth perception in low-light, overcast, or hazy conditions by filtering blue light. The clear lens provides maximum light transmission with full impact protection for indoor, nighttime, or artificial-light environments.

Retention is field-configurable between standard temple arms for static or low-intensity activity and a detachable elastic strap that converts the frame into a goggle-like configuration for dynamic movement. This interchangeability is the core operational capability of the system, allowing a single platform to meet the demands of an indoor range shoot and an outdoor navigation course within the same deployment. Component security must be verified before any dynamic activity, as an unseated lens or unsecured strap presents a readiness risk.

Polycarbonate lenses provide shatter resistance for general field use but are not rated to ANSI Z87+ or military ballistic standards. Operators should confirm PPE requirements with a range safety officer when high-velocity fragmentation is a known threat. Lenses must be cleaned with water, mild soap, or approved lens solutions only, as solvents, fuels, and DEET will degrade the polycarbonate and its coatings.

Field Application Steps

1. ASSESS ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Identify the ambient light level and operational intensity of your current phase. Select the clear lens for indoor or low-light environments, the yellow lens for overcast or hazy conditions, and the smoke lens for bright sunlight or high-glare settings.

2. INSPECT ALL COMPONENTS BEFORE DEPLOYMENT: Check the frame for stress fractures around the lens channel and hinge points. Examine all three lenses for deep scratches, cracks, or coating delamination, and inspect the elastic strap for fraying, loss of elasticity, or connector damage.

3. INSTALL THE MISSION-APPROPRIATE LENS: Grasp the nylon frame at the bridge and one outer edge. Align one side of the lens into the groove, then gently flex the frame while pressing the lens into the channel from one side to the other. Apply firm pressure at the nose bridge and corners until the lens seats with an audible click.

4. VERIFY LENS SECURITY: Lightly push on the installed lens from the inside to confirm it is fully seated. A lens that shifts or flexes under light pressure is not properly secured and must be reseated before use.

5. SELECT AND ATTACH THE APPROPRIATE RETENTION SYSTEM: For static or low-intensity activity, confirm the standard temple arms are correctly attached at the hinge points. For dynamic movement, detach the temple arms by actuating the release mechanism at the hinge, then align the connectors on the detachable elastic strap with the corresponding frame ports and press until they lock into place.

6. EXECUTE MID-MISSION LENS CHANGE WHEN CONDITIONS SHIFT: Find a stable, clean area before initiating a lens swap. Hold the frame securely and apply firm thumb pressure to the top-center of the installed lens from the inside, pushing it forward and out of the frame. Wipe the replacement lens with the microfiber pouch before installation to remove fingerprints.

7. FIT AND ADJUST FOR SECURE WEAR: Place the configured eyewear on your head and adjust the strap or temple arms for a snug fit that does not cause discomfort or restrict circulation. Conduct a final security check on both the lens and retention system before commencing any dynamic movement.

8. EXECUTE POST-USE CLEANING AND STORAGE: Rinse the frame and lenses with clean water to remove dust and grit, then wipe both sides of each lens with the microfiber pouch and an approved lens cleaner. Do not use paper products or clothing. Allow all components to air dry completely, then store the full system in the foam-padded zippered hard case with unused lenses placed in their designated foam cutouts.
