Quick Overview

The Rothco Flyers Helmet Shoulder Bag is a soft-shell padded transport and storage system designed to protect aviation, tactical, rescue, and vehicular helmets during transit and staging, used by aircrew, ground operators, and emergency personnel moving mission-critical headgear between operational areas.

The bag is built around a 19-inch by 19-inch main padded compartment lined with quilted cushioning that absorbs minor impacts and prevents scratches to helmet shells, visors, and sensitive optical or electronic attachments. Two external pockets with hook-and-loop and snap closures provide rapid access to mission-essential items such as flight gloves, checklists, and tourniquets. Two internal slip pockets handle low-profile items including communication cables, spare batteries, and identification. The heavy-duty brass main zipper is protected by a fabric storm flap engineered for field conditions.

Carry capability is configured for two operational modes. The detachable polyester shoulder strap with metal snap hooks enables hands-free transport across the flight line or through crowded spaces, adjusted to sit at the hip to prevent excessive swing. The two fixed top carry handles serve as the default method for rapid short-distance movement such as lifting from a vehicle or carrying through a doorway.

Operators must understand the bag's defined limits before deployment. The 420D polyester construction is not waterproof and offers only mild resistance to light rain. The total packed weight must not exceed 20 lbs (9 kg) to prevent premature failure of stitching, handles, or the shoulder strap. The bag is a soft-shell carrier only and will not protect contents from crushing force, significant drops, or submersion.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-LOADING INSPECTION: Visually inspect the bag's exterior and interior for rips, tears, or compromised stitching before every operational deployment. Actuate the main zipper fully to confirm smooth, snag-free operation and verify the storm flap is intact.

2. HARDWARE AND PADDING CHECK: Inspect the shoulder strap, snap hooks, and D-rings for wear, corrosion, or damage, and confirm snap hooks engage securely. Check that the quilted interior padding is intact and free of debris that could scratch helmet surfaces or optical attachments.

3. PRIMARY LOAD, HELMET: Open the main compartment fully and place the helmet inside with the visor facing upward or oriented toward the most padded section of the interior.

4. SECONDARY LOAD, INTERNAL POCKETS: Place cables, spare batteries, or a notebook into the internal slip pockets, ensuring items are positioned so they will not shift during transport and contact the helmet.

5. SECURE MAIN COMPARTMENT: Close the main zipper completely and confirm the fabric storm flap is seated fully over the zipper track before moving to external loading.

6. TERTIARY LOAD, EXTERNAL POCKETS: Load flight gloves into one external pocket and the kneeboard or checklist into the other. Secure all hook-and-loop and snap closures on both pockets.

7. CONFIGURE CARRY METHOD: For hands-free movement across the flight line or through crowded areas, attach the shoulder strap and adjust it so the bag sits at the hip to prevent excessive swing. For rapid short-distance movement, use the two top carry handles as the default carry method.

8. UNPACK ON A STABLE SURFACE: Place the bag on a clean, stable surface before unpacking. Access external pockets first if any immediate-need items are required prior to opening the main compartment.

9. HELMET REMOVAL: Open the main compartment fully and remove the helmet by grasping the shell directly. Do not lift or pull by attached communications gear or NVG shrouds.

10. POST-MISSION ACCOUNTABILITY: Clear all internal and external pockets completely and confirm every piece of equipment is accounted for before the bag is staged or stored.
