Quick Overview

Rothco Full-Finger Rappelling Gloves are professional-grade leather hand protection designed for trained operators conducting controlled rope descents, tactical vertical entry, search and rescue operations, and heavy-duty rigging where friction, heat, and abrasion present direct injury risk.

The gloves are constructed from genuine cowhide leather with a reinforced double-layer palm designated as the primary control surface. This layered architecture absorbs the friction-induced heat generated during rope contact, protecting the operator from thermal injury while providing the tactile feedback necessary to modulate descent speed with precision. All primary rope control must be executed through the reinforced palm zone. Integrated padding positioned over knuckles, thumbs, and fingers dissipates blunt force impacts against rock faces and structural surfaces during descent.

Fit and closure are not secondary concerns in this deployment context. The hook and loop wrist closure is a critical security component that anchors the glove against rotation or displacement during dynamic rope work. A glove that shifts mid-descent compromises both protection and control simultaneously. The fit standard is snug with full dexterity, and no sleeve material should be bunched within the closure.

Operator readiness depends on pre-use and post-use inspection protocols executed every deployment cycle. The reinforced palm must be checked for thinning, cuts, or penetration. All load-bearing seams require tactile tracing. Any breach in palm material, failed stitching, or non-functional closure renders the gloves non-mission-capable. Retirement criteria are condition-based, not time-based, and are non-negotiable in a rope operations environment.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-USE INSPECTION: Perform a full visual and tactile inspection of both gloves before donning. Check the reinforced palm for thinning, cuts, or abrasions, trace all seams around the fingers and palm reinforcement, and actuate the wrist closure multiple times to confirm secure adhesion. If any defect is identified, remove the gloves from service immediately.

2. DONNING AND SECURING: Don each glove ensuring every finger is fully seated to the base of the finger stall. Secure the hook and loop wrist closure firmly, confirming the glove does not rotate or slide on the hand, and verify that no underlying sleeve material is bunched within the closure area.

3. INTERFACE WITH ROPE AND DESCENT DEVICE: Position the reinforced palm as the primary contact surface for the brake hand before engaging the rope system. Confirm that glove bulk does not interfere with the safe operation of your descent control device, whether an ATC, Figure 8, or equivalent. Establish a firm, confident grip using the cowhide surface to receive tactile feedback from the rope.

4. EXECUTION OF CONTROLLED DESCENT: Use the brake hand to modulate rope friction throughout the descent, keeping the reinforced palm as the primary load-bearing surface. Use padded knuckles and fingers to deflect contact with window frames, ledges, and other structural hazards along the descent path. If heat transfer through the leather becomes painful during a long or fast descent, slow or stop the descent immediately and allow the equipment to cool before continuing.

5. POST-OPERATION INSPECTION AND DOFF: Upon mission completion, doff the gloves and perform an immediate post-use inspection using the same protocol as the pre-use check. Document any damage identified, assess the gloves for continued mission readiness, and remove from service any glove that does not meet the serviceability standard.

6. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE: Remove surface dirt and debris with a stiff brush, and if heavily soiled, wipe with a cloth dampened with clean water without saturating the leather. Allow gloves to air dry naturally, away from fire, heaters, and direct sunlight, as direct heat causes leather to become brittle and crack. If the leather becomes stiff, apply a specialized leather conditioner sparingly and test on a small area before full application.

7. STORAGE: Store the gloves in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight and UV exposure. Do not store compressed or in sealed containers where moisture can accumulate against the leather.
