The cover's primary structural advantage over legacy cotton covers is its 1000 Denier Cordura nylon construction, which provides superior resistance to abrasion, punctures, and water. A metal-reinforced drainage grommet at the base prevents water-logging after rain, submersion, or condensation exposure, accelerating dry time in field conditions. The main compartment is sized specifically for a standard 1-qt G.I. canteen, preventing excessive movement during dynamic activity.

Deployment onto an operator's load-bearing equipment is accomplished via two ALICE keeper clips mounted on the rear of the cover. These clips are designed for G.I. pistol belts and ALICE webbing. A dedicated front hook-and-loop pouch provides immediate-access storage for water purification tablets, keeping treatment capability co-located with the water source it is intended to treat.

Operators should understand two critical limitations before field deployment. First, the 1000D nylon construction offers negligible thermal insulation and will not maintain liquid temperature for extended periods. Second, the front pouch is water-resistant, not waterproof, meaning purification tablets and other stored items are not protected from submersion or driving rain. Canteen Not Included.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE COVER: Examine all stitching for integrity, confirm both ALICE keeper clips are undamaged and their sliding keepers move and lock correctly, and test the hook-and-loop closure on the front pouch for full grip and function.

2. INSERT THE CANTEEN: Obtain a clean, filled, and sealed standard 1-qt G.I. style canteen. Seat it fully into the main compartment of the cover, ensuring it is fully seated with no excessive play.

3. LOAD THE ANCILLARY POUCH: Place a strip or bottle of water purification tablets inside the front hook-and-loop pouch. Press the flap down firmly until the hook-and-loop closure is fully engaged and contents are secured.

4. MOUNT TO LOAD-BEARING EQUIPMENT: Unlock the sliding keeper on each ALICE clip. Thread each clip behind the belt or compatible webbing, press it flat against the backing, then slide the keeper down until it snaps over the pointed end of the clip. An audible click confirms secure engagement.

5. CONDUCT A RETENTION CHECK: Grasp the fully loaded assembly and pull firmly in multiple directions. Zero significant play is acceptable. If movement is detected, remove the cover and re-seat both ALICE clips before proceeding.

6. ACCESS WATER DURING OPERATIONS: Draw and use the canteen without removing the cover from your load-bearing equipment. The cover is designed to allow canteen access while remaining mounted.

7. EXECUTE FIELD WATER RESUPPLY: When filling from a natural or unknown source, remove the canteen from the cover, fill it, then retrieve purification tablets from the front pouch. Follow the tablet manufacturer's instructions for dosage and contact time completely before consuming any water.

8. CONDUCT POST-MISSION SUSTAINMENT: Remove the canteen before cleaning. Brush off loose debris, then clean the cover with a stiff brush and mild soap and water. Do not machine wash. Do not use bleach. Rinse thoroughly, then air dry completely, preferably out of direct prolonged sunlight, ensuring the interior is fully dry before storage to prevent mildew and material degradation.
