Quick Overview

The Rothco G.I. Type 1-Quart Canteen and Cover is a BPA-free plastic field hydration container used by hikers, campers, and tactical operators to carry potable water during patrols, training exercises, and survival operations lasting two to four hours.

The canteen system is built around three functional groups: water containment, carry and insulation, and ancillary storage. The canteen body holds 32 ounces of water and is secured by a threaded cap with an integrated retainer strap that prevents cap loss during field use. The polyester cover protects the canteen from abrasion and UV degradation, while the felt lining provides passive insulation and supports evaporative cooling when saturated. A metal belt clip and two-button snap closure allow secure integration with belts and MOLLE/PALS webbing.

Deployment readiness depends on a deliberate pre-mission protocol. Before any operation, the operator inspects the canteen body for cracks or stress whitening, verifies the cap seal is pliable, and confirms both snap closures engage with a positive, audible click. The canteen is filled from a verified potable source, leaving a small air gap, then positioned on the non-dominant side rearward of the hip for unobstructed access. A jump test confirms retention before movement begins.

This canteen is a container only and provides no water treatment capability. Water from unverified sources must be treated by filtration, chemical purification, or boiling before it enters the canteen. The BPA-free plastic construction is not rated for direct heat and will melt if placed near flame or a camp stove. In sub-freezing conditions, the canteen must not be filled beyond three-quarters capacity to prevent rupture from ice expansion.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE SYSTEM: Check the canteen body for cracks, stress whitening, and physical damage, particularly around the neck and base. Verify the cap seal is present and pliable, and inspect the cover stitching, snaps, and belt clip for integrity.

2. CLEAN BEFORE USE: If the canteen is new or returning from storage, wash the canteen body and cap thoroughly with warm, soapy water using a bottle brush on interior surfaces. Rinse completely and allow to air dry with the cap off before filling.

3. FILL FROM A VERIFIED SOURCE: Fill the canteen with confirmed potable water only. Leave a small air gap and do not fill to the absolute brim. If the water source is unverified, treat it by filtration, chemical purification, or boiling before placing it in the canteen.

4. SECURE THE CANTEEN IN ITS COVER: Place the filled canteen into the polyester cover and fasten the two-button snap closure. Confirm both snaps produce a positive, audible click, then apply a firm tug to verify retention.

5. MOUNT AND POSITION ON KIT: Attach the cover to your belt or webbing using the metal belt clip, or thread the clip through MOLLE/PALS webbing. Position the canteen on your non-dominant side, rearward of the hip, for unobstructed movement and one-handed access.

6. CONDUCT A JUMP TEST: Jump in place briefly to confirm the canteen is fully secured and does not shift, rattle, or interfere with your range of motion before beginning operations.

7. EXECUTE THE FIELD HYDRATION PROTOCOL: Unfasten the cover snaps with your non-dominant hand, grasp the canteen, and unscrew the cap. The retainer strap will prevent cap loss. Drink as required while maintaining situational awareness, then immediately replace and tighten the cap.

8. RE-SECURE AFTER HYDRATION: Return the canteen to the cover and re-engage both snaps before resuming dynamic movement. Do not move under load with the cover open or the cap loose.

9. APPLY HOT-WEATHER COOLING PROCEDURE: In high-heat environments, submerge the cover or pour water over its exterior until the felt lining is fully saturated. As water evaporates from the cover, it draws heat from the canteen contents. Re-saturate the cover each time it dries to maintain the cooling effect.

10. CONDUCT POST-MISSION SUSTAINMENT: After the mission, empty any remaining water and wash the canteen and cap with mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly, then air dry completely with the cap off to prevent mold, mildew, and bacterial growth.

11. STORE FOR LONG-TERM READINESS: Store the clean, completely dry canteen in a cool, dark, and dry location. Leave the cap off or placed loosely on the neck to promote air circulation and prevent trapped moisture from degrading the interior.
