The poncho is constructed from rip-stop polyester with a polyurethane coating that forms the primary waterproof layer across its 56-inch by 90-inch profile. The cross-hatched weave arrests tear propagation under field stress, and the integrated hood with drawstring provides a cinching seal against driving rain and wind. Four reinforced metal grommets at the corners serve as anchor points for cordage when rigging an overhead shelter, and dual snap closures along the sides allow the garment to form sleeves for improved arm mobility and weapon manipulation. A full component check prior to every deployment is a baseline readiness requirement.

The poncho is rated for sustained tension loads at the grommets but is not load-bearing and must never be used as a hammock, litter, or drag-bag, as doing so will result in catastrophic material failure. The PU-coated fabric is non-breathable and presents a suffocation hazard if used as a fully enclosed sleeping configuration without a clear airway. The material is 100% polyester and not fire-retardant, requiring a safe standoff distance from all open flame sources including campfires and stoves.

Post-deployment sustainment requires cleaning with cool water and a soft cloth only. Machine washing or chemical detergents will destroy the PU coating and compromise waterproof capability. The poncho must be stored bone dry in a cool, dark location to prevent mildew and UV-driven degradation of both the coating and the underlying fibers.

Field Application Steps

1. DEPLOY: Remove the folded poncho from its storage pouch or exterior pack pocket. Before donning, conduct a rapid visual inspection for pinholes, tears, or areas where the PU coating is peeling.

2. ORIENT: Unfold the poncho completely and locate the integrated hood at its center. Confirm the hood drawstring is intact and all snap closures are functional.

3. DON: Pass your head through the hood opening and pull the hood into place. Allow the material to drape fully over your body and load-bearing equipment, ensuring the rear edge extends below the bottom of your pack to prevent water channeling to the lumbar area.

4. SECURE THE HOOD: Grasp the drawstring and cinch it to form a functional seal around your face or headwear. Tuck away all excess cordage to eliminate snag hazards.

5. SECURE THE SIDES: Align the poncho's side edges and engage each pair of snap closures from the top down to form sleeves. This configuration improves arm mobility, supports weapon system control, and reduces wind flap in dense terrain.

6. SELECT SHELTER SITE: When transitioning to overhead shelter configuration, identify two stable anchor points such as trees or rock outcroppings with clear, safe ground beneath. Orient the shelter to place the windward face into the prevailing wind.

7. ESTABLISH RIDGELINE: Run paracord or equivalent cordage between the two anchor points at a height sufficient for personnel to sit or crouch beneath the finished shelter.

8. POSITION PONCHO OVER RIDGELINE: Drape the poncho centered over the ridgeline with the hood facing down. Cinch the hood drawstring tight to prevent water pooling at that point.

9. SECURE WINDWARD GROMMETS: Attach cordage to the two grommets on the wind-facing side and stake them directly to the ground or tie them to nearby ground anchors for a low-profile, wind-resistant edge.

10. TENSION LEEWARD GROMMETS: Run cordage from the remaining two grommets to ground anchors, pulling the fabric taut to form an angled, water-shedding roof. Adjust tension until all sagging is eliminated.

11. DEPLOY AS GROUND TARP: When using as a ground cover, first clear the area of all sharp objects including sticks, stones, and debris that could puncture the material from beneath. Lay the poncho flat with the PU-coated side facing up to maximize the waterproof barrier between personnel or equipment and ground moisture.

12. SECURE IN WIND: In windy conditions during ground tarp use, place rocks or heavy gear on all four corners to prevent the poncho from lifting and exposing personnel or equipment beneath it.
