Quick Overview

A general purpose first aid kit is a portable, field-ready collection of wound care supplies that enables operators to manage minor cuts, scrapes, and abrasions in outdoor, marine, vehicle, or workshop environments without access to professional medical facilities.

The Rothco General Purpose First Aid Kit (Model 8335) is built around a waterproof hard-shell case with an integrated rubber gasket seal, protecting all internal components from water intrusion, dust, and compression damage. The kit contains a sequenced set of supplies organized by function: wound cleaning and decontamination, topical infection prevention, wound dressing and coverage, and securing materials. This structure supports a repeatable, protocol-driven treatment process that any prepared operator can execute consistently under field conditions.

Core components include hydrogen peroxide for initial irrigation, iodine and alcohol prep pads for perimeter skin disinfection, antibiotic ointment for infection prevention, sterile gauze pads and adhesive bandages in assorted sizes for wound coverage, and medical tape for securing dressings. Each component serves a specific role in the treatment sequence. Hydrogen peroxide is limited to initial cleaning of heavily contaminated wounds, as repeated use can be cytotoxic to healthy tissue.

This kit is scoped for non-life-threatening injuries only and is not a trauma kit. It does not contain tourniquets, hemostatic agents, or pressure dressings. Readiness is maintained through inspection every six months and after every deployment, with immediate replenishment of any component used to return the kit to full operational readiness.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND PATIENT ASSESSMENT: Move you and the patient to a safe, stable location away from immediate hazards. Visually confirm the injury is a minor wound with controlled bleeding. Do not proceed with this kit if you observe arterial bleeding or a laceration that may require sutures.

2. ACCESS AND PREPARE EQUIPMENT: Retrieve the kit and open the hard case on a dry, stable surface. Lay out required items in order of use: hydrogen peroxide, several sterile gauze pads, antibiotic ointment, a larger sterile gauze pad for the final dressing, and medical tape.

3. HAND HYGIENE: Wash your hands thoroughly or use an alcohol prep pad to clean them before contacting the wound or any sterile supplies.

4. WOUND IRRIGATION: Generously apply hydrogen peroxide to flush visible dirt, mud, and debris from the wound. Wipe with a sterile gauze pad using a center-outward motion to avoid re-contaminating the wound site.

5. PERIMETER DISINFECTION: Use an alcohol or iodine prep pad to disinfect intact skin around the wound edges. Do not apply these directly into the open wound after initial cleaning.

6. DRY THE WOUND AREA: Pat the wound and surrounding skin dry using a clean, sterile gauze pad. The area must be dry before applying ointment.

7. APPLY ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT: Apply a thin, even layer of antibiotic ointment over the entire surface of the cleaned laceration and abrasions. Confirm the patient has no known allergies to antibiotic components before application.

8. DRESS THE WOUND: Select a sterile gauze pad large enough to completely cover the injured area. Place it directly over the wound without touching the wound-contact surface with your fingers.

9. SECURE THE DRESSING: Tape all four sides of the gauze pad to the skin with medical tape. The dressing should be snug enough to stay in place but not tight enough to impair circulation.

10. REPACK AND MONITOR: Repack all unused items and secure the hard case latches. Instruct the patient to monitor for infection signs including redness, swelling, heat, and pus. Change the dressing every 24 hours or sooner if it becomes wet or soiled.
