1. PRE-LOAD INSPECTION: Lay the bag flat and conduct a full visual inspection of all seams and the canvas body. Verify that the box "X" stitching at all shoulder strap and side handle anchor points is intact with no thread separation or material fatigue.
2. HARDWARE FUNCTION CHECK: Manipulate the metal hook-and-eyelet closure and confirm the spring-loaded gate opens and closes completely. Check the interior and exterior for debris or residual moisture before loading.
3. GEAR SEGREGATION: Separate all items by size and density before loading. Use packing cubes or stuff sacks to compartmentalize smaller items and maintain organizational control within the single main compartment.
4. LOAD EXECUTION: Place heavy, dense items such as boots, rolled shelter halves, and heavy outerwear at the base of the bag to establish a stable foundation. Layer lighter, bulkier items such as sleeping bags and clothing on top, then fill remaining voids with smaller soft items to create a dense, settled load.
5. CLOSURE AND LOAD COMPRESSION: Stand the bag upright and allow contents to settle fully. Grasp the fabric around the top opening, pull it together, and pass the metal hook through the appropriate eyelet. Use a lower eyelet for smaller loads to compress contents, then confirm the hook's gate has snapped fully shut.
6. MOISTURE PROTECTION PROTOCOL: Before closing, confirm that all electronics, documents, and insulation materials are sealed inside waterproof dry bags within the main compartment. The canvas will saturate in sustained rain and provides no waterproof barrier on its own.
7. WRAPPING ABRASIVE ITEMS: Wrap any sharp, hard-edged, or metallic items in clothing or soft materials prior to loading. Direct contact between metal or hard edges and the canvas interior will cause accelerated wear and eventual penetration of the material over time.
8. DONNING AND TRANSPORT: Lift the bag onto a raised surface such as a bench or tailgate using the side grab handle before donning. From the raised position, don one shoulder strap at a time, stand up to settle the load, and adjust both straps for even weight distribution with the bag riding high on the back.
9. VEHICLE LOADING: Use the side grab handle when loading or unloading from vehicles to maintain positive control of the bag. Avoid using the shoulder straps as the primary grip point during vehicle operations to prevent snagging and strap stress.
10. POST-MISSION INSPECTION: Before stowing the bag, inspect for new damage including rips, tears, and bent or deformed hardware that may have occurred during transport. Address small punctures or tears immediately using a heavy-duty needle and thread or dental floss as a field substitute, with a canvas repair patch kit as the preferred readiness item.
11. CLEANING AND STORAGE: Shake the bag inverted to remove loose debris, then spot-clean with a stiff brush and cold water only. Do not machine wash or use detergents, as this strips the canvas's natural water-resistant properties. Hang the bag and allow it to air dry completely before folding or storing in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
