Quick Overview

The Rothco Glacier Sunglasses are a modular ocular protection system designed for operators working in high-glare, high-wind, and particulate-heavy environments where snow blindness, UV exposure, and debris present direct threats to vision and mission capability.

The core protection system pairs 2.0mm polycarbonate lenses with UV400 certification, blocking 100% of UVA and UVB radiation, with anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings that maintain a usable sight picture through temperature transitions and abrasive conditions. Removable leather side shields snap to the frame arms to create a goggle-like seal against lateral light and blowing particulates, while a removable leather nose cover blocks upward-reflected light from snow or water surfaces and completes the frontal seal. An elastic neck lanyard secures the eyewear during dynamic movement and prevents loss when the glasses are temporarily removed in the field.

Deployment environments include high-altitude snow terrain, desert trekking, open-vehicle movement, and maritime operations where multi-directional glare is a sustained threat. The modular configuration allows the operator to remove the leather guards entirely, converting the system to standard-duty sunglasses when threat conditions decrease, eliminating the need to carry multiple pairs of eyewear.

A critical readiness limitation: these glasses are not rated for ballistic protection under MIL-PRF-32432 or industrial safety standards under ANSI Z87.1, and must not be used as primary eye protection where fragmentation or high-velocity impact hazards are present. Composite plastic frames also become brittle in sub-zero temperatures, requiring careful handling when donning or doffing in extreme cold.

Field Application Steps

1. ASSESS ENVIRONMENT AND SELECT CONFIGURATION: Before donning, evaluate your operational environment for glare intensity, wind speed, and particulate presence. If conditions are high across all three factors, full protection configuration with both leather side shields and nose cover is required.

2. ATTACH LEATHER SIDE SHIELDS: Align the snaps on each leather side shield with the corresponding snaps on the frame arms. Apply firm, even pressure until you confirm a tactile and audible click from each snap. Pull each shield gently outward to verify positive retention before proceeding.

3. ATTACH LEATHER NOSE COVER: Snap the leather nose cover over the frame bridge using the same snap-and-confirm method. Once attached, verify that the cover does not obstruct your primary forward field of view.

4. DON EYEWEAR AND SECURE LANYARD: Place the sunglasses on your face and confirm a comfortable, stable fit on your nose and ears. Position the elastic neck lanyard around your neck and adjust until it is snug enough to retain the glasses if dislodged, while still allowing unrestricted head movement.

5. CONDUCT FIELD OF VIEW CHECK: Before moving, execute a slow 360-degree scan to assess your full visual picture. Note that leather side shields will create significant blind spots in peripheral vision. Incorporate deliberate, active head movement into your standard scanning protocol to compensate throughout the operation.

6. RECONFIGURE FOR CHANGING CONDITIONS: If environmental conditions change, such as moving indoors or transitioning to reduced wind and glare at dusk, remove the eyewear and secure it around your neck via the lanyard. Unsnap the side shields and nose cover, and store all removed leather components in a dedicated pocket or pouch to prevent loss or damage. Re-don the eyewear in the configuration appropriate to the new conditions.
