The 19.25-inch folding steel handle, threaded locking collar, and no-slip rubber grip form the control group, while the shovel head, 6.5-inch folding pick, 90-degree locking position, and serrated shovel edge form the action group. Each component serves a distinct function, and deployment requires deliberate configuration changes between tasks.

The threaded locking collar is the primary mechanical interface for all configuration changes. Rotating clockwise tightens and locks all components into a rigid linear configuration. Counter-clockwise rotation allows the head to pivot for reconfiguration into hoe or pick mode. Confirming full mechanical lock before any high-force application is non-negotiable. A partially locked tool can collapse under load, causing sudden loss of operator control and potential injury.

Field readiness depends on consistent pre-mission inspection and post-mission sustainment. After use, all components require thorough cleaning, drying, and a light application of CLP or 3-in-1 oil to prevent corrosion. Sharpening is performed with a mill bastard file only. High-speed grinders are prohibited because heat degrades the steel's temper.

Field Application Steps

1. INITIAL DEPLOYMENT: Remove the E-Tool from its stowed location and grasp the handle sections firmly. Unfold the handle until straight, then unfold the head assembly to expose both the shovel head and the pick.

2. LOCK AND CONFIRM CONFIGURATION: Rotate the threaded locking collar clockwise until hand-tight, locking all components into a rigid linear configuration. Attempt to flex the tool at its joints. Any wobble requires additional tightening. Do not proceed to any task until the tool is fully rigid.

3. RECONFIGURE FOR HARD GROUND (PICK AND HOE MODE): When ground is too compact for the shovel blade, loosen the locking collar counter-clockwise just enough to allow the head to pivot. Fold the shovel head down 90 degrees perpendicular to the handle and unfold the pick to its extended position, then re-tighten the locking collar firmly.

4. BREAK COMPACTED SOIL: Strike compacted ground with controlled, focused blows, engaging body weight and leg muscles rather than arm strength alone. Use the hoe-configured shovel head to pull loosened material away from the obstacle area after fracturing.

5. RECONFIGURE FOR EXCAVATION (SHOVEL MODE): Loosen the locking collar, straighten the shovel head back to the inline position, and re-tighten the collar firmly before resuming digging. Confirm mechanical lock before applying force.

6. EXCAVATE AND CLEAR: Begin removing loosened soil from the work area using the shovel head in standard spade configuration. Work systematically from the obstacle outward to prevent material from backfilling the cleared zone.

7. CUT ROOTS WITH SERRATED EDGE: When roots are encountered during excavation, engage the serrated lateral edge of the shovel blade. Use a forceful push-pull sawing motion to sever roots cleanly and clear the excavation path.

8. STOW THE TOOL: Loosen the locking collar significantly, then fold the shovel head and pick assembly down toward the handle. Fold the handle sections and lightly tighten the locking collar to prevent rattling or unfolding during transport.

9. POST-MISSION CLEANING AND CORROSION CONTROL: Thoroughly clean all soil, mud, and moisture from the entire tool before final stowage, with particular attention to locking collar threads and pivot points. After drying, wipe all carbon steel components with a lightly oiled cloth using CLP or 3-in-1 oil to prevent rust.
