Quick Overview

The Rothco Interchangeable Optical System is a modular eyewear platform used by operators requiring adaptable eye protection across changing environmental conditions, converting between sunglass and goggle configurations via a bayonet temple or elastic strap retention system.

The system operates in two distinct configurations. Sunglass Mode uses a pair of rigid Bayonet Temples for low-retention, low-profile wear suited to vehicle operations, range use, and general duty under helmets or hearing protection. Goggle Mode uses a single Adjustable Elastic Strap to create a high-retention, sealed face interface for dynamic physical activity, high-wind environments, desert conditions, and rotary wing operations. Conversion between modes is executed in the field by detaching one retention component and attaching the other via a positive-click locking mechanism.

The polycarbonate frame with smoke lens provides UV400 protection, blocking UVA and UVB radiation, and includes anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings. Interior foam padding seals against wind, dust, and light debris in Goggle Mode while enhancing comfort during sustained wear. This system is not ballistic-rated and does not meet MIL-PRF-32432 or ANSI Z87.1 impact standards. It is authorized for incidental debris protection only, not fragmentation or high-velocity projectile environments.

Pre-deployment readiness for this system requires inspection of the frame for stress fractures, the lens for scratches or coating delamination, the foam padding for separation or deterioration, and the strap for fraying or loss of elasticity. Component security is a critical readiness factor, as a loose temple or strap connection can result in system failure at a decisive moment.

Field Application Steps

1. COMPONENT CHECK: Inspect the Bayonet Temples and all frame connection points for debris, cracks, or deformation before attachment. A compromised connection point will prevent a positive lock.

2. ATTACH BAYONET TEMPLES: Identify left and right temples, align each connection point with the corresponding slot on the frame, and press firmly until you feel and hear an audible click confirming the lock is seated.

3. TEST TEMPLE RETENTION: Apply a gentle outward pull to each temple to verify the connection is secure before donning the system.

4. DON IN SUNGLASS MODE: Place the system as standard eyewear. The flat, straight Bayonet Temples are designed to slide under helmet shells, hat brims, and over-the-ear hearing protection without interference.

5. INITIATE FIELD TRANSITION TO GOGGLE MODE: Remove the system from your face before beginning the conversion. Attempting to swap components while wearing the system risks dropping and losing components.

6. DETACH BAYONET TEMPLES: Grip the frame close to each connection point and depress the release mechanism or apply firm, steady outward pressure until the temple releases. Stow both temples securely to prevent loss in the field.

7. ATTACH ELASTIC STRAP: Align the strap connector with the frame slot on each side and press firmly until you receive a positive click. Confirm both sides are locked before donning.

8. DON AND SEAT THE FRAME: Place the frame flush against your face to establish a comfortable seal along the foam padding perimeter, then pull the elastic strap over the crown of your head.

9. ADJUST STRAP TENSION: Use the slide buckles to tension the strap until the seal blocks wind and debris without causing pressure discomfort or restricting circulation. The fit standard is secure seal, not maximum tightness.

10. MANAGE FOGGING IF IT OCCURS: If the anti-fog coating is overwhelmed by extreme temperature differential, high humidity, or exertion, briefly break the frame seal to allow manual ventilation, then reseat.
