Quick Overview

The Rothco IWB Holster is a soft-body, inside-the-waistband concealment system designed for everyday carry operators who require low-visibility, deep-concealment capability under a cover garment with minimal profile.

The holster is built around three core components: a 600 denier polyester body that fully covers the trigger guard and cushions the firearm against the operator's body, a single hard plastic clip that seats over belts up to 1.75 inches wide, and an adjustable hook and loop retention strap that provides active Level II retention over the slide or hammer. This system prioritizes concealability and comfort over speed of re-holstering, making it appropriate for everyday carry, backup weapon deployment, and non-permissive environments where printing must be minimized. It is not rated for duty or high-threat use and does not meet Level III or higher retention requirements.

The most critical operational limitation of this system is its re-holstering protocol. Because the polyester body collapses once the firearm is drawn, direct re-holstering inside the waistband creates a serious negligent discharge risk. Operators must remove the entire holster assembly from the waistband, visually clear the opening of obstructions, insert the firearm into the removed holster, secure the retention strap, and then re-insert the full assembly. This procedure is non-negotiable and must be rehearsed before deployment.

As a consumable piece of equipment, the holster requires daily inspection of the clip for stress fractures, the stitching at all attachment points, the retention strap surface for lint or debris fouling, and the holster body for tears or excessive softening. Any identified deficiency, particularly with the clip or retention system, is grounds for immediate removal from service.

Field Application Steps

1. CLEAR AND INSPECT THE FIREARM: Unload the firearm and visually and physically inspect the chamber and magazine well to confirm it is safe before handling the holster or performing any configuration steps.

2. TEST FIT AND VERIFY TRIGGER GUARD COVERAGE: Insert the cleared firearm into the holster body and confirm the holster fully covers the trigger guard with no gaps or exposure before proceeding.

3. ADJUST AND SET RETENTION: Secure the hook and loop strap over the rear of the slide or hammer. The firearm should have no front-to-back movement, yet the strap must disengage cleanly with thumb pressure using minimal effort. Readjust strap length as needed to achieve this balance.

4. REHEARSE THE DRAW STROKE DRY: With the cleared firearm in the holster, practice the complete draw stroke. Focus on using the firing-hand thumb to decisively sweep the retention strap forward as the master grip is established, repeating until the motion is smooth and repeatable before loading.

5. SELECT CARRY POSITION AND DON THE HOLSTER: Determine your carry position, such as appendix or strong-side 3 to 4 o'clock, and slide the holster with the cleared firearm secured inside into that position inside your waistband.

6. SECURE THE CLIP TO THE BELT: Drive the plastic clip firmly down over your belt. Tug upward on the holster to confirm it is fully seated and will not pull free during the draw stroke. Use a purpose-built gun belt rated for this application to prevent the holster from being drawn with the firearm.

7. LOAD THE FIREARM: Only after the holster is fully secured in position, and only when the situation dictates, load the firearm per standard safe handling procedures.

8. CONDUCT A CONCEALMENT CHECK: Arrange your cover garment and check your profile in a mirror to confirm the firearm is not printing through the fabric.

9. EXECUTE THE DRAW STROKE: When deployment is required, use your support hand to lift and clear the cover garment, drive your firing hand down to establish a high firm master grip, defeat the retention strap with your firing-hand thumb in a single fluid motion, and draw straight up until the firearm clears the waistband before rotating toward the threat and presenting to your line of sight.

10. RE-HOLSTER USING THE MANDATORY REMOVAL PROCEDURE: Remove the entire holster assembly from your waistband before re-holstering under any circumstances. Visually inspect the holster opening for obstructions such as shirt fabric or drawstrings, carefully insert the firearm into the removed holster, re-engage the retention strap fully, and then re-insert the complete assembly into your waistband with the clip fully seated on your belt.

11. CONDUCT DAILY INSPECTION: Before each use, inspect the plastic clip for stress fractures or warping, check all stitch lines especially at the clip and strap attachment points, clean lint and debris from the hook and loop surfaces, and inspect the holster body for tears or excessive softening that could compromise trigger guard coverage.
