Quick Overview

The Rothco M-1 Jungle First Aid Kit is a compact, belt-mounted basic first aid kit designed for hikers, campers, and field personnel who require immediate point-of-injury care for minor wounds, abrasions, and common field ailments in recreational and general outdoor environments.

The kit's carrier system is built around a heavy-duty, abrasion-resistant canvas pouch with dual pistol belt clips and a double-snap closure, providing secure, accessible deployment on standard web belts or duty belts. The pouch is water-resistant but not waterproof, making proper storage and post-deployment inspection critical to maintaining readiness. Contents are organized across cleaning, dressing, and medication categories to support a logical, sequential treatment protocol at the point of injury.

Wound care capability centers on a layered dressing system that includes Steripads in two sizes, a 3-inch military bandage, Telfa non-adherent pads for abrasions and minor burns, a conforming bandage, and adhesive tape for securing dressings. Antiseptic wipes and a bar of soap support decontamination before and during treatment. Examination gloves are included and must be donned before any patient contact to protect both the operator and the casualty from pathogen exchange.

The kit also carries aspirin packs for adult pain relief and sugar packs for conscious patients displaying signs of hypoglycemia. Both medications carry strict administration warnings detailed in Section 4 of the guide. This kit is scoped for Basic First Aid only and does not include tourniquets, chest seals, or airway adjuncts, making it unsuitable as a standalone trauma response kit.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE ASSESSMENT AND SAFETY: Confirm the immediate area is free of ongoing hazards such as unstable footing or falling debris before approaching the casualty. Relocate the casualty to a stable position if the environment presents continued risk.

2. KIT DEPLOYMENT AND PPE: Disengage both snaps on the M-1 canvas pouch to access contents. Don examination gloves before making any contact with the casualty or wound.

3. INJURY ASSESSMENT: Visually inspect the wound to confirm it is within the kit's treatment scope. Do not proceed with this kit if arterial bleeding, embedded objects, or injuries requiring tourniquet or airway management are present.

4. HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: Place a Steripad directly over the laceration and apply firm, sustained direct pressure until bleeding is controlled. Maintain pressure without lifting the pad to assess the wound prematurely.

5. WOUND CLEANING: Once bleeding is controlled, use antiseptic wipes to clean the intact skin surrounding the wound, wiping outward from the wound edge. Do not wipe directly inside deep wounds. Note that iodine-based wipes may cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

6. WOUND DRESSING SELECTION: For lacerations, apply a fresh Steripad or the absorbent pad from the 3-inch military bandage directly over the cleaned wound. For abrasions or minor burns, apply a Telfa non-adherent pad to prevent the dressing from adhering to raw tissue.

7. SECURE THE DRESSING: Wrap the affected limb with the 2-inch conforming bandage using overlapping turns, applying snug but not constrictive pressure. Verify circulation is intact by checking for a distal pulse or capillary refill in the fingers. Secure the terminal end of the wrap with adhesive tape.

8. MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION IF INDICATED: Administer aspirin for adult pain relief only after confirming the casualty is conscious, over 18 years of age, not on blood thinners, and has no known NSAID allergy. Administer sugar packs only to a fully conscious and alert casualty who can swallow independently and is displaying signs of hypoglycemia.

9. POST-CARE AND SUSTAINMENT: Advise the casualty to seek formal medical evaluation at the earliest opportunity. Dispose of used gloves and contaminated materials properly, packing them out of the field environment. Restock all expended components before the next deployment.
