Quick Overview

The Rothco Map and Document Case is a field-ready, weather-resistant document protection system used by military small unit leaders, SAR operators, law enforcement field personnel, and wilderness navigators to protect and actively use paper-based navigation aids and mission-critical documents in austere environments.

The case operates as a two-layer protection system. The outer 100% nylon shell provides primary resistance against abrasion, tears, and light precipitation, while two inner resealable plastic bags serve as the only waterproof components in the system. This distinction is critical to deployment readiness: the nylon shell will saturate in a downpour or during submersion, and full waterproof protection depends entirely on the integrity of the inner bag seals. The 13.5-inch by 13.5-inch platform accommodates a standard folded topographical map or letter-sized documents without excessive refolding.

The clear vinyl window enables active navigation and annotation without removing documents from the case. Operators can draw routes, mark locations, and record notes directly on the vinyl surface using grease pencils or alcohol-based markers, preserving the underlying map from permanent damage. Metal grommets at the base of the shell function as drainage ports, not waterproofing elements, and allow water to exit if the case is inundated during field operations.

Long-term readiness requires treating the inner plastic bags as consumable items. Bags must be inspected before each mission by holding them to a light source to check for pinholes, and the zip-lock closure must be clean and fully sealed along its entire length. Standard heavy-duty freezer bags of comparable size are acceptable field-expedient replacements when original bags show wear, discoloration, or seal failure.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-MISSION INSPECTION: Inspect the nylon shell for rips, failed stitching, or excessive abrasion. Check the vinyl window for punctures, deep scratches, or cracks, and verify both resealable bags by holding each one to a light source to confirm there are no pinholes and that the zip-lock closure seals completely along its full length.

2. DOCUMENT PRIORITIZATION: Categorize your documents before loading. Designate active-use documents, such as your topographical map folded to the primary area of operations, separately from protected documents such as communications plans, ICE protocol sheets, and team rosters.

3. LOAD SECONDARY DOCUMENTS INTO BAG 1: Place all protected, non-active documents into the first resealable bag. Purge air from the bag and seal firmly, running your fingers across the zip-lock two to three times to confirm full closure.

4. LOAD THE ACTIVE MAP INTO BAG 2: Place the topographical map, folded to the primary area of operations, into the second resealable bag. Purge air and seal using the same two-to-three pass method.

5. INSERT BAGS INTO THE NYLON SHELL: Insert Bag 1 containing secondary documents into the shell first. Then insert Bag 2 with the map face oriented against the clear vinyl window so it is visible without opening the case.

6. SECURE THE OUTER CLOSURE: Close the main flap or zipper of the nylon shell fully to prevent debris ingress and secure all contents for movement.

7. NAVIGATE AND ANNOTATE THROUGH THE VINYL WINDOW: Use a grease pencil or alcohol-based marker to draw routes, mark locations, or record notes directly on the vinyl surface. Test any new marker on an unobtrusive corner of the window before full use to confirm it will not permanently cloud or damage the vinyl.

8. ACCESS SECONDARY DOCUMENTS WITH DISCIPLINE: If you need to retrieve a protected document, find cover before opening the case. Remove only the appropriate sealed bag and minimize the time the case interior is exposed to precipitation.

9. DRAIN WATER AFTER SUBMERSION OR HEAVY DOWNPOUR: If the case is inundated, hold it by the top and allow water to drain through the metal grommets at the base. This reduces weight and prevents pooling inside the shell.

10. POST-MISSION DRYING AND CLEANING: Wipe exterior surfaces and the vinyl window with a damp cloth, using mild soap for heavy soiling. Open the case fully, separate all components, and air dry completely before reassembly to prevent mold and mildew.

11. POST-MISSION BAG INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT: Inspect both resealable bags after each use. Replace any bag showing wear, discoloration, pinhole damage, or seal failure before the next deployment. Standard heavy-duty freezer bags of comparable size are acceptable field-expedient replacements.
