A lensatic sighting compass is a non-electronic magnetic bearing instrument used by military personnel, search and rescue operators, and field navigators to determine precise directional headings and execute azimuth-based movement when electronic navigation is unavailable or compromised.

The lensatic compass consists of three functional component groups that work in combination to deliver accurate bearing readings. The Sighting and Targeting Group includes the cover, sighting wire, and rear sight assembly with magnifying lens. The Bearing and Orientation Group provides the liquid-filled floating dial and fixed index line from which magnetic azimuths are read. The Handling and Stability Group, built around cast aluminum housing and a thumb loop, ensures the stable grip required for the compass-to-cheek technique that defines professional deployment of this instrument.

Accurate readiness requires awareness of magnetic interference sources that compromise readings. Operators must maintain a minimum of 60 meters from high-tension power lines, 20 meters from vehicles and heavy machinery, 2 meters from personal weapon systems, and 1 meter from radios, GPS units, and cell phones. Additionally, this compass indicates Magnetic North, not True or Grid North. Operators are responsible for applying local declination corrections, as failure to do so introduces significant navigational error over distance.

Pre-operation inspection is a non-negotiable step in the readiness protocol. Operators must confirm the dial settles freely on north, verify the sighting wire is taut and the magnifying lens is clear, and inspect the liquid chamber for large bubbles that would render the compass unreliable. Prolonged storage near strong magnetic fields can permanently degrade needle magnetic properties.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-OPERATION INSPECTION: Inspect the housing and crystal for cracks, verify hinges move smoothly and hold position, confirm the sighting wire is taut, and check the liquid chamber for large obstructing bubbles. Test dial movement in a metal-free area to confirm it turns freely and settles on north.

2. OPEN AND CONFIGURE THE COMPASS: Unfold the cover to 90 degrees from the body. Fold the rear sight assembly back to approximately 45 degrees so the floating dial is visible through the magnifying lens.

3. ESTABLISH GRIP AND STANCE: Insert your dominant thumb through the thumb loop and curl your index finger around the front of the body, with remaining fingers forming a firm, level base. Face your direction of travel and anchor the rear sight assembly against your cheekbone, consistent with a rifle firing position.

4. ACQUIRE A MAGNETIC AZIMUTH (PROCEDURE 3.1): Look through the peep sight and align the vertical sighting wire with a distant, identifiable landmark. While holding that sight picture, glance down through the magnifying lens and read the degree value aligned under the fixed index line. That value is the magnetic azimuth to that landmark.

5. ORIENT BODY TO A KNOWN BEARING (PROCEDURE 3.2): To follow a known bearing such as 095 degrees, assume the compass-to-cheek hold and rotate your entire body, feet, torso, and head as one unit, until the target bearing aligns under the fixed index line. Do not move the compass independently of your body during this step.

6. IDENTIFY YOUR STEERING MARK: Freeze your position with the bearing set. Look up through the peep sight past the sighting wire and identify a distinct landmark directly in your line of sight. This is your steering mark for the next leg of movement.

7. EXECUTE MOVEMENT AND REPEAT: Lower the compass and move directly to the steering mark. Upon arrival, reassume the compass-to-cheek position, re-establish the bearing, identify the next steering mark, and continue the sequence until reaching your objective.

8. POST-OPERATION SUSTAINMENT: Clean exterior dirt and moisture with a soft cloth only, no chemical solvents. Store the compass away from extreme temperatures, speakers, magnets, and electrical equipment to prevent permanent degradation of needle magnetic properties.
