Quick Overview

The Rothco MOLLE 2 Pocket Ammo Pouch is a modular dual-compartment load-bearing pouch used by operators to organize and rapidly retrieve ammunition, tools, and mission-essential accessories on plate carriers and PALS-compatible platforms.

The pouch is constructed from 600 Denier polyester fabric, providing abrasion resistance and water-resistant performance across field environments. Its dual-pocket configuration, consisting of a main compartment measuring approximately 8 inches by 6.5 inches by 2 inches and a smaller front pocket, allows the operator to segregate ammunition types or separate ammunition from utility items by access priority. Hook-and-loop flap closures on both compartments enable rapid, single-handed retrieval without breaking movement.

Attachment to any PALS-compatible platform is accomplished through two reinforced rear MOLLE straps secured by metal snap closures. Correct deployment requires an alternating weave pattern through the carrier webbing and the rear panel of the pouch, with each snap pressed to confirmed engagement. Improper attachment is the primary failure point: a loose pouch can be snagged and lost under field conditions, making attachment verification a non-negotiable step before any operational use.

The pouch supports primary carriage of boxed or loose rifle rounds in .223 and 5.56, as well as 12-gauge and 20-gauge shotgun shells. Secondary carriage capability includes batteries, small medical supplies, weapon cleaning tools, ear protection, and navigation aids. Sensitive electronics and paper documents require a separate waterproof container when carried in this pouch during wet weather operations.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually inspect all seams, stitches, and MOLLE strap attachment points on the rear panel for frayed or broken threads. Check the pouch body for rips, tears, or excessive abrasion, and use a stiff brush to clear embedded debris from hook-and-loop surfaces before actuating each metal snap to confirm crisp engagement.

2. MISSION STAGING: Confirm the specific equipment to be carried and designate pocket use by access priority before loading anything. In the scenario outlined in this guide, that means the weapon cleaning kit goes to the front pocket and 12-gauge shells go to the main compartment.

3. LOAD FRONT POCKET: Insert the immediate-need or smaller item into the front pocket first and confirm the flap closes completely without excessive strain on the hook-and-loop closure.

4. LOAD MAIN COMPARTMENT: Place primary cargo, such as loose 12-gauge shells or boxed rifle rounds, into the main compartment. If the operational environment requires noise discipline, arrange loose rounds to minimize rattle before closing the flap.

5. VERIFY FLAP CLOSURE: Confirm both flaps close with full hook-and-loop contact across the entire fastener surface. Partial closure reduces retention security and is not acceptable before field use.

6. SELECT MOUNTING POSITION: Identify a position on the plate carrier or PALS platform that does not impede access to primary equipment or create an unbalanced load. Account for the weight a fully loaded pouch will add before committing to a location.

7. INITIATE MOLLE WEAVE: Align the top of the pouch with the desired row of PALS webbing on the carrier. Thread both MOLLE straps down through the first available PALS row on the carrier, then route each strap back up through the corresponding row of webbing on the rear panel of the pouch.

8. COMPLETE ALTERNATING WEAVE: Continue the alternating weave pattern, moving carrier to pouch to carrier, until the full length of each strap is used. Tuck the strap ends through the last available PALS loop on the carrier to eliminate excess.

9. ENGAGE SNAP CLOSURES: Press each metal snap closure firmly until an audible and tactile click is confirmed. Both snaps must be fully engaged before the attachment is considered complete.

10. CONDUCT PULL TEST: Grip the loaded pouch firmly and attempt to pull it away from the carrier. Minimal to no movement should be present. If the pouch shifts or pulls away, remove it entirely and repeat the weaving procedure from the beginning.
