The retention and access system centers on a quick-release buckle closure that enables single-handed deployment without requiring fine motor skill. The E-tool is stowed blade-end first, the top flap is secured over the handle, and the buckle is engaged until an audible and tactile click confirms a positive lock. Deployment reverses this sequence: stabilize the pouch, depress both sides of the buckle simultaneously with the dominant hand, and draw the tool clear in a smooth upward motion.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM E-TOOL CONFIGURATION: Ensure the E-tool is in its fully collapsed, tri-fold configuration before stowage. Verify that all locking collars are disengaged so the tool sits flat and compact.

2. INSERT E-TOOL BLADE-END FIRST: Insert the folded E-tool into the main pouch body with the blade end going in first. This orientation positions the handle at the top for rapid deployment access.

3. SECURE THE RETENTION FLAP: Pull the top flap down over the exposed handle of the E-tool to fully cover the opening. Confirm the handle is contained beneath the flap before proceeding to buckle engagement.

4. ENGAGE THE QUICK-RELEASE BUCKLE: Press the male buckle end firmly into the female end until you register an audible and tactile click. Pull gently on the buckle to confirm a positive lock before moving.

5. SELECT YOUR MOLLE MOUNTING LOCATION: Identify a suitable PALS grid point on your load-bearing equipment. Recommended positions are the rear or sides of a pack, or the rear of a battle belt, to preserve front-body mobility.

6. EXECUTE THE INITIAL WEAVE: Thread both MOLLE straps downward through the first available row of PALS webbing on your gear. Ensure both straps are seated fully before continuing.

7. INTERLOCK AND COMPLETE THE WEAVE: Weave each strap back up through the first webbing loop on the pouch itself. Continue this alternating pattern until the full length of both straps is woven through the PALS grid.

8. FASTEN TERMINAL SNAPS AND VERIFY ATTACHMENT: Fasten all terminal snaps to lock the weave in place. Then aggressively pull and shake the mounted pouch in multiple directions. If the pouch shifts or sags, remove and redo the weave before proceeding.

9. DEPLOY THE E-TOOL UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS: Stabilize the pouch with your non-dominant hand if needed. Depress both sides of the quick-release buckle simultaneously with your dominant hand, then draw the E-tool clear of the pouch in a smooth, upward motion.

10. RE-STOW AFTER USE: Clear gross contamination of mud, clay, or ice from the E-tool before re-stowing when tactically feasible. Debris transferred into the buckle mechanism can degrade retention reliability.
