Quick Overview

Rothco NIJ Approved Handcuffs are certified stainless steel mechanical restraints used by sworn law enforcement, corrections officers, and authorized security professionals to temporarily control, secure, and transport subjects during arrest and detention operations.

These handcuffs meet NIJ Standard 0307.01, validating them for official duty use where equipment failure is not an option. The stainless steel construction provides superior resistance to corrosion from rain, humidity, sweat, and biological contaminants, making them field-ready across all environmental conditions including maritime and high-humidity assignments. The double-lock mechanism is the critical safety feature of this system: when engaged, it freezes the pawl and prevents the cuff from tightening further, directly mitigating the risk of radial neuropathy, circulatory compromise, and tissue necrosis from over-application.

Proper deployment follows a deliberate six-step protocol beginning with pre-deployment staging and physical control before any equipment is introduced. Cuff fit is confirmed using the index finger standard, where the fingertip must pass between the cuff and the subject's wrist. Double locks must be engaged on both cuffs without exception and verified by attempting to pull the single strand tighter. Operators must then monitor for positional asphyxia risk, repositioning any prone subject to seated or recovery position as soon as tactically safe.

Sustainment of this system requires a pre-shift inspection covering visual integrity, mechanical function, and lock system verification. Routine cleaning with a nylon brush and compressed air, lubrication with one drop of gun oil at the keyway and pawl interface, and proper key management are all components of a readiness protocol that ensures the restraint performs when deployment demands it.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT STAGING: Carry cuffs in a designated duty case staged so the single strand can be pushed straight through the double strand without manipulation. Confirm your primary key is immediately accessible and stored separately from your secondary backup key.

2. ESTABLISH PHYSICAL CONTROL BEFORE APPLICATION: Never lead with equipment. Gain physical control of the subject first, then direct them to place their hands behind their back.

3. APPLY FIRST CUFF: Place the single strand over the wrist in the saddle between the hand and the ulna styloid. Push the strand through the double strand until it clicks securely into place.

4. SECURE SECOND CUFF AND POSITION HANDS: Bring the subject's second hand to meet the first. Position both hands with palms outward and thumbs up whenever tactically feasible to limit the subject's ability to manipulate the locks or defeat the restraint through leverage. Apply the second cuff.

5. CONFIRM PROPER FIT: The tip of your index finger must pass between the cuff and the subject's wrist on both cuffs. Adjust before proceeding if the fit is too tight or too loose.

6. ENGAGE DOUBLE LOCK ON BOTH CUFFS: Using the actuator pin on the back of the key, depress the double lock pin on each cuff. Verify engagement by attempting to pull the single strand tighter. It must not move. Announce to the subject: "The cuffs are double-locked. They will not get any tighter. Do not struggle."

7. EXECUTE POST-APPLICATION PROTOCOL: Proceed with search incident to arrest. Monitor the subject continuously during transport and check cuffs periodically for security and signs of tampering. Reposition any prone subject to seated or recovery position as soon as tactically safe to eliminate positional asphyxia risk.
