Quick Overview

The Rothco Folding Ear Muffs are passive hearing protection rated NRR 32dB, designed for operators in live-fire, industrial, and aviation environments where high-decibel noise poses an immediate risk to long-term hearing capability.

These ear muffs provide passive, non-electronic sound attenuation against both impulse noise such as gunfire and continuous noise such as heavy machinery or aircraft engines. The folding design enables compact stowage without sacrificing structural integrity, making them a field-ready option for range operations, industrial worksites, and high-noise transit. Because they are passive, they attenuate all sound equally, including verbal commands and alarms, which requires operators to maintain heightened situational awareness and rely on visual cues during wear.

Effective deployment depends entirely on acoustic seal integrity. Any gap between the foam ear cushions and the user's head allows sound to bypass the protection completely, negating the rated NRR. Real-world noise reduction is typically 50 to 70 percent of the laboratory NRR due to factors including improper fit, facial hair, and eyewear interference. Operators must verify seal quality after donning by pressing firmly on each cup and confirming that perceived sound does not decrease significantly under additional pressure.

The ABS ear cups, POM headband, foam cushions, slide adjustment mechanism, and folding hinges each require inspection before every use. Cracked cups, torn cushions, or compromised hinges constitute critical device failure and require immediate removal from service. Foam cushions are consumable components that degrade over time and must be replaced whenever they show stiffness, tearing, or loss of pliability to maintain protection at protocol standard.

Field Application Steps

1. UNPACK AND INSPECT: Remove the ear muffs from storage and unfold both ear cups outward until each hinge clicks fully into the deployed position. Do not force the hinges. Perform a visual inspection of all components: check ABS cups for cracks or chips, foam cushions for tears or permanent compression, the POM headband for stress marks especially at hinge points, and the slide adjustment mechanism for proper function.

2. CLEAR HEAD OBSTRUCTIONS: Remove or reverse any brimmed hat that would interfere with headband placement on the crown of the head. Pull back hair that could break the acoustic seal around the cushions. If wearing eyewear, position the arms of the frames above the cushion rings, not underneath them.

3. DON THE EAR MUFFS: Spread the cups apart and place the headband over the top of the head. Position both cups so that each ear is fully enclosed inside the cushion ring. Ears must sit inside the foam rings, not compressed underneath them.

4. ADJUST FIT: Use the slide adjustment mechanism on each side to move the cups up or down until the headband rests on the crown of the head and each cup is centered directly over the ear canal. Proper positioning ensures the cushion contacts the head evenly around the full perimeter of each ear.

5. VERIFY ACOUSTIC SEAL: Press firmly on the outside of each cup with your palms. If ambient sound decreases noticeably when you apply pressure, the initial seal is inadequate. Re-adjust fit and repeat the test. A properly sealed cup will produce little to no change in perceived sound when additional pressure is applied.

6. DOFF AND STOW: Once clear of the noise hazard, grasp both cups and pull outward to remove. Wipe moisture and debris from the cushion surfaces using a cloth dampened with mild soap and water only. Do not use solvents, alcohol-based cleaners, or abrasive agents. Fold each cup inward to collapse the unit into compact form and stow in a clean, dry, protected location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
