Quick Overview

The Rothco ANSI Ballistic OTG Goggles are MIL-DTL-43511D and ANSI Z87-1 rated eye protection designed for operators who wear prescription eyewear and require a full facial seal against ballistic fragmentation, airborne debris, and high-velocity impact hazards in tactical and industrial environments.

The goggle system is built around a 2mm polycarbonate lens that meets both MIL-DTL-43511D ballistic fragmentation and ANSI Z87-1 high-velocity impact standards, with UV400 solar protection integrated into the lens. The flexible TPU frame absorbs impact energy and conforms to facial structure, while 3/8" foam padding completes the peripheral seal against fine particulates. These components work as a unified protection system, not independent parts. Rated protection is only achieved when a continuous, uninterrupted seal is established around the full orbital area.

The Over-The-Glasses configuration is the defining capability of this system. Dedicated 7/8" OTG temple cutouts allow prescription glasses' temple arms to pass through the goggle frame, so the goggle contacts the face directly rather than resting on the glasses frame. This eliminates the need for prescription inserts or contact lenses in austere field conditions and maintains consistent visual acuity without compromising the seal. If an operator's prescription frames are too large to allow a proper seal, the goggles must not be deployed.

Sustaining this equipment requires disciplined pre-use and post-use inspection, authorized cleaning methods using only the provided microfiber cloth or mild soap and lukewarm water, and immediate retirement of any goggle that has sustained a significant impact, even with no visible lens damage. Exposure to DEET, chemical solvents, or fuels degrades both the polycarbonate lens and TPU frame and is prohibited. The system is ballistic-resistant, not bulletproof, and operators must understand that limitation before deployment.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually examine the polycarbonate lens for cracks, scratches, or delamination. Inspect the TPU frame and 3/8" foam seal for tears, then test strap elasticity and confirm buckle function before proceeding.

2. DON PRESCRIPTION EYEWEAR: Ensure your prescription glasses are clean and properly seated on your face exactly as normally worn. Do not adjust their position to accommodate the goggles.

3. GOGGLE INTEGRATION: Using both hands, place the goggles over your prescription glasses and guide the temple arms through the 7/8" OTG cutouts. Confirm the goggle frame is contacting your face directly, not resting on your glasses frame.

4. SEAL VERIFICATION: Press the frame firmly against your face and verify a continuous, uninterrupted seal around the full orbital area. Use your fingers to check for gaps at the nose bridge and temples. If a complete seal cannot be achieved, do not proceed with deployment.

5. STRAP ADJUSTMENT AND RETENTION: Position the elastic strap around the back of your head and adjust until the fit is snug and secure without applying excessive pressure. Confirm the rubberized grip is engaging with your hair or headwear to prevent shifting during dynamic movement.

6. HELMET INTEGRATION: If a combat helmet is required, don the helmet and move the goggle strap to the exterior. Allow the movable side hinges to articulate and accommodate the helmet's profile. Re-verify the facial seal and conduct a full range of head motion to confirm the system remains stable and sealed.
