Quick Overview

The Rothco G.I. Type Oversized Folding Cot is a military-pattern elevated sleeping platform used by field personnel, emergency responders, and preparedness operators who require a stable, deployable bedding system in austere or expeditionary environments.

The cot is built around an aluminum main frame with reinforced legs and center support bars rated to 300 lbs static load. The 80-inch length and 32-inch width are sized specifically for personnel over 6 feet tall, preventing body-to-frame contact that degrades sleep quality and reduces readiness. Elevation to 18.5 inches off the ground provides thermal insulation from cold ground surfaces, protection from moisture and pests, and designated under-cot space for organized gear stowage.

The sleeping surface is a 600 Denier polyester deck with a PVC coating, combining high tear and abrasion resistance with moisture resistance that supports field cleaning and decontamination protocols. Tension across the deck is created by two end bars inserted into fabric sleeves at the head and foot, which then seat into the aluminum frame receivers. The cot deploys without tools and collapses into a polyester carry case with a shoulder strap for transport and storage.

Sustainment protocol requires full drying of the fabric deck before storage to prevent mold and mildew degradation. Pre-deployment inspection covers frame welds, pivot rivets, deck stitching at the end bar sleeves, and component accountability. Field-expedient repairs to minor fabric tears can be made with high-strength gear tape as a temporary measure pending proper replacement.

Field Application Steps

1. SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION: Identify the most level ground available within your assigned area and clear an 80-inch by 32-inch footprint of sharp rocks, roots, and debris that could puncture the fabric deck or damage frame legs. Uneven ground will twist the aluminum frame and compromise stability under load.

2. UNPACK AND LAY OUT COMPONENTS: Remove the folded cot from the polyester carry case and set the carry case and both loose end bars to the side within reach. Lay the folded cot flat on the cleared ground and begin opening the main frame.

3. EXPAND AND LOCK THE FRAME: Unfold the aluminum main frame completely until it forms a rectangle with all four legs perpendicular to the ground. Verify every hinged joint is fully open and locked before proceeding. The fabric deck will remain slack until end bars are installed.

4. INSTALL END BARS TO TENSION THE DECK: Slide one end bar through the fabric sleeve at one end of the deck, align its connection points with the frame receivers, and connect one side. Place one foot on the frame leg to stabilize, then apply firm leverage to seat the bar fully into the receiver on the opposite side. Repeat this process on the other end of the cot.

5. CONDUCT FINAL STABILITY CHECK: Press down firmly in the center of the deck. It should feel taut and stable with minimal wobble. Confirm all four feet are in contact with the ground before use.

6. STOW GEAR UNDER THE COT: Use the 18.5-inch clearance beneath the frame for organized stowage of rucksacks, boots, and personal equipment. This keeps your gear off the ground and your immediate area operationally organized.

7. EXECUTE BREAKDOWN IN REVERSE SEQUENCE: To break down, stabilize the frame and apply firm, controlled force to disengage each end bar from its receiver. Be prepared for a sudden tension release as each bar disengages. Once both bars are removed, fold the frame and secure all components, including both end bars, in the carry case before moving.
