Quick Overview

The Rothco Police Holster is a Level I open-carry duty holster designed for law enforcement, professional security, and authorized open-carry personnel who require reliable firearm retention for 4-inch to 5-inch barrel semi-automatics on a standard 2.25-inch duty belt.

The holster is constructed from heavy-duty polypropylene webbing with a leatherette interior lining. The rigid webbing maintains structural integrity and keeps the holster mouth open after the draw, enabling one-handed re-holstering under field conditions. The leatherette lining protects the weapon's finish and reduces friction for a quieter, smoother draw stroke, a capability that carries genuine tactical value in certain deployment environments.

Retention is provided by a single adjustable thumb snap strap, the sole active retention device at Level I. The hook-and-loop anchor allows length and tension adjustment to fit specific firearm models, eliminating excessive movement while maintaining a fast and deliberate draw. Personnel must understand that Level I retention provides basic security against accidental loss but can be defeated by a third party with relative ease, making this holster unsuitable for high-risk prisoner handling, crowd control, or any scenario where a weapon-grab attempt is a high-probability threat.

The integrated belt loop is sized specifically for 2.25-inch law enforcement duty belts. The wide mounting interface stabilizes the holster against tilting, shifting, or sliding, ensuring a consistent and repeatable draw stroke platform across all deployments. This holster is designed strictly for open, strong-side hip carry and is not rated or configured for concealed carry, inside-the-waistband, cross-draw, or small-of-the-back carry.

Field Application Steps

1. FITMENT AND RETENTION ADJUSTMENT: With the firearm unloaded, seat it fully into the holster and adjust the thumb snap strap using the hook-and-loop anchor until the strap passes snugly over the rear of the slide or hammer with no excessive play. Confirm the weapon does not rock or shift inside the holster body.

2. MOUNT TO DUTY BELT: Thread the integrated belt loop onto a standard 2.25-inch law enforcement duty belt at the strong-side hip position. Confirm the holster sits stable without tilting, shifting, or sliding before proceeding.

3. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Inspect all seams and stitching for fraying or separation, check the holster body for cracks or deformation, verify the thumb snap closes with positive engagement, and confirm the leatherette lining shows no tears or peeling that could snag sights or controls during the draw.

4. ESTABLISH GRIP AND DEFEAT RETENTION: Assume a ready stance and move your firing hand to the firearm, acquiring a full firing grip while the weapon remains holstered. With your thumb naturally positioned on the outside of the thumb snap, apply firm downward pressure to release the snap as a single deliberate action integrated into the gripping motion.

5. EXECUTE DRAW STROKE: Draw straight up until the weapon fully clears the holster mouth, then rotate and drive toward the target, meeting your support hand for a two-handed firing grip. Repeat this sequence with an unloaded weapon until the motion is fully reflexive before conducting any live-fire practice.

6. SCAN AND ASSESS BEFORE RE-HOLSTERING: Before returning the firearm to the holster, scan the immediate area to confirm it is secure. Keep your trigger finger indexed along the frame of the firearm at all times.

7. GUIDE AND SEAT THE WEAPON: Bring the firearm to the holster and use the rigid mouth to guide the muzzle in. Do not use your support hand to open or steady the holster.

8. SECURE AND CONFIRM RETENTION: Push the firearm fully into the holster until seated. Re-engage the thumb snap over the firearm and confirm retention with an audible click followed by a firm physical tug test.

9. POST-SHIFT CLEANING AND SUSTAINMENT: After each shift, wipe down the exterior webbing and interior lining with a damp cloth. For heavy soiling, use a soft brush with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and air dry completely away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not use solvents, oils, bleach, ammonia, or harsh chemical cleaners, as these will degrade the polypropylene and leatherette and compromise structural integrity.
