Quick Overview

A reversible PVC poncho is a dual-sided waterproof garment used by law enforcement, EMS, search and rescue, and field operators to provide 100% moisture protection and user-selectable visibility management in deteriorating weather conditions.

The Rothco Reversible PVC Poncho is constructed from .20mm laminated PVC fabric, providing a heavy-gauge waterproof barrier against rain, sleet, and snow. The integrated drawstring hood seals the head and neck against driving weather, while side snap closures convert the garment from a simple drape into a fully enclosed, wind-resistant shell. The weight of the material reduces excessive flapping in high-wind conditions, a common failure point of lightweight disposable alternatives. This construction supports sustained field deployment, not single-use coverage.

The dual-sided design delivers direct operational capability beyond basic weather protection. The low-visibility exterior, available in Black, OD Green, or Blue, supports routine patrol and tactical movement where maintaining a low visual profile is required. The high-visibility yellow interior is reserved for roadside emergencies, traffic control, and SAR signaling, and is accessed by removing the poncho, turning it completely inside-out, and re-donning with the yellow surface facing outward. This reconfiguration takes seconds and requires no additional equipment.

When not worn, the poncho's PVC construction supports improvised field use as a waterproof ground cover, a hasty shelter element, or a gear protection layer. Proper sustainment, including air drying only, hand cleaning with mild soap, and storage away from prolonged UV exposure, preserves the waterproof lamination and extends the operational service life of the garment.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Unfold the poncho completely and hold it up to a light source. Inspect both sides for holes, tears, seam separation, or delamination, and test every snap closure and the hood drawstring before heading into the field.

2. DON FOR WEATHER PROTECTION: Pass your head through the hood opening with the low-visibility color facing outward. Allow the material to drape fully over your body and any worn equipment, including backpacks and duty belts.

3. SECURE THE HOOD: Grasp both drawstrings and cinch the hood around your face to seal against rain and wind. Tie a simple bow or engage the cord lock, but do not over-tighten, and confirm your airway, vision, and hearing remain unobstructed.

4. FASTEN SIDE SNAP CLOSURES: Starting from the top, align and firmly press each snap together down the full length of both sides until you hear an audible click. This converts the poncho from an open drape into a sealed, wind-resistant garment.

5. RECONFIGURE FOR HIGH-VISIBILITY OPERATIONS: Move to a safe location away from active traffic. Unfasten all side snaps, remove the poncho, and turn it completely inside-out to expose the High-Visibility Yellow surface.

6. RE-DON AND RESECURE IN HIGH-VISIBILITY MODE: Pass your head through the hood confirming the yellow side faces outward. Re-secure the hood drawstring and fasten all side snaps in sequence from top to bottom.

7. DEPLOY AS IMPROVISED GROUND COVER: When poncho use as a worn garment is not required, clear the intended area of sharp rocks, sticks, and debris. Unfold completely and lay flat with the low-visibility side down, then place gear or personnel on top to use the PVC as a moisture barrier from the ground.

8. POST-DEPLOYMENT CLEANING AND DRYING: Wipe light soiling with a damp cloth. For heavy soiling, use a soft sponge with water and mild dish soap only. Do not machine wash, bleach, or use chemical solvents. Air dry fully open in a shaded, well-ventilated area before stowing.

9. STOW FOR NEXT DEPLOYMENT: Confirm both interior and exterior surfaces are 100% dry before folding or rolling tightly for storage. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct, prolonged UV light exposure to prevent the PVC from becoming brittle over time.
