Quick Overview

Rothco Safety Green High-Visibility Gloves are cold-weather PPE designed for operators conducting traffic control, search and rescue, and roadside operations in low-light, adverse weather conditions where passive conspicuity and hand protection are both mission-critical.

The gloves combine a fluorescent neon green nylon shell with silver retroreflective tape positioned at the knuckles, palm, and index finger. The shell provides maximum daytime visibility against natural and urban backgrounds, while the reflective tape activates under vehicle headlights and emergency lighting during nighttime deployment. Tape placement is deliberate: the knuckle and palm position maximizes the open-hand stop signal, and the index finger placement enhances directional pointing for guiding vehicular movement.

Environmental protection is provided by three integrated systems: an interior waterproof bladder that blocks moisture ingress from rain and snow, Thermoblock insulation that traps body heat to preserve manual dexterity during prolonged exposure, and a 100% Nylon Cordura outer shell that resists abrasion and protects the inner components from field damage. Dry, warm hands are a direct readiness factor, as cold-induced numbness degrades fine motor capability and the ability to operate radios, flares, and comms devices.

Operators must understand the capability boundaries of this equipment before deployment. The reflective tape is a passive system requiring an external light source and is not a substitute for active lighting. These gloves carry no certified rating for impact, cuts, punctures, or HAZMAT exposure and are not appropriate for extrication, rope rescue, or chemical environments.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT VISUAL INSPECTION: Examine the outer shell for rips, tears, or holes that could compromise the waterproof bladder. Confirm all reflective tape segments are intact, fully adhered, and showing no peeling at the edges.

2. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INTERNAL CHECK: Run your fingers inside each glove to verify the lining is dry and the insulation is not compacted or bunched in any section. Compromised insulation reduces thermal protection and indicates a possible bladder breach.

3. DON GLOVES FOR PROPER FIT: Pull each glove on so your fingertips reach the end of the glove cavity. A snug fit at the fingertips is required for tactile feedback and positive equipment manipulation; a loose fit degrades both.

4. ORIENT REFLECTIVE SURFACES TOWARD TRAFFIC: Consciously present the reflective knuckle and palm surfaces toward oncoming vehicles when issuing a stop signal. Use a clear open-palm stop and a deliberate pointing index finger for directional commands to maximize retroreflective return from headlights.

5. MAINTAIN POSITIVE GRIP ON EQUIPMENT: Use the rubberized fingertip and textured palm surfaces when handling flares, traffic cones, radios, and other field tools. These surfaces are engineered for non-slip control in wet conditions and should be used actively, not passively.

6. MONITOR DEXTERITY THROUGHOUT DEPLOYMENT: Periodically test fine motor function by operating a small control such as a radio button or clasp. If numbness is present and fine motor capability is degraded, follow unit cold injury protocol and seek a warmer environment before returning to the post.

7. DOFF FROM THE CUFF: At end of mission, remove gloves by pulling from the cuff downward rather than tugging individual fingers. This protects seam integrity and extends service life.

8. POST-MISSION WET GLOVE PROTOCOL: If gloves are wet, do not store them. Proceed immediately to sustainment: hand wash with mild soap and cool water, then air dry completely by laying flat or hanging from the cuffs. Never use a machine dryer or expose to direct heat, as high temperatures destroy the waterproof membrane and insulation.

9. STORE CORRECTLY BETWEEN DEPLOYMENTS: Once fully dry, store gloves in a dry, dark location away from direct sunlight. UV exposure degrades hi-vis fluorescence and breaks down nylon fiber over time, reducing both visibility and structural durability.

10. INSPECT FOR END OF SERVICE CONDITIONS: Remove gloves from service if any of the following are present: a breach in the outer shell or bladder, loss of more than 25% of any reflective tape segment, insulation that is permanently compressed or fails to dry after cleaning, or any failure to maintain warmth or dryness under standard field conditions.
