Quick Overview

The Rothco Security 5-Point Breakaway Vest is a high-visibility safety garment used by security personnel operating in traffic control, crowd management, industrial patrols, and event security environments where conspicuity and anti-entanglement protection are operationally required.

The vest is a non-ballistic, non-load-bearing visibility garment built on a 100% polyester mesh chassis. It provides 360-degree conspicuity through 2-inch silver retro-reflective tape and high-contrast "SECURITY" markings on both the front and back panels. It is ANSI/ISEA 107-2010 Class 2 rated for traffic control environments with vehicle speeds below 50 mph. Its open-weave construction reduces heat retention during extended deployment, making it suitable for sustained outdoor operations.

The 5-point breakaway system is the vest's primary safety mechanism. Hook-and-loop panels at both shoulders, both sides, and the front closure are engineered to release instantly when a threshold pulling force is applied, whether from snagging on machinery or from a grab by a non-compliant individual. This design prevents the operator from being dragged, pulled off balance, or physically controlled through the garment. The breakaway feature is a passive system designed to mitigate dragging and snagging hazards, not to defeat a determined physical attacker.

Equipment integration is built into the design at the component level. Dual shoulder mic tabs allow a radio speaker microphone to be routed without occupying the operator's hands. A chest-mounted clear ID holder eliminates lanyard use, removing a separate choking and snag hazard from the operator's profile. All load-bearing defensive tools must remain on a duty belt or tactical vest worn underneath, as any equipment attached to the breakaway vest will be lost in a release event.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT ALL FIVE BREAKAWAY CLOSURES: Physically separate and visually inspect each of the five hook-and-loop breakaway points before donning. Remove lint, dirt, or debris from all panels and verify that stitching around each closure is secure.

2. DON THE VEST AS THE OUTERMOST LAYER: Place the vest over your uniform or outermost garment. The vest must be the final layer worn to ensure maximum visibility and proper breakaway function. Do not wear additional garments over the vest.

3. SECURE THE FRONT CLOSURE FIRST: Align and press the front hook-and-loop panel until fully seated. A properly secured front closure provides the structural baseline for the remaining attachment points.

4. SECURE BOTH SIDE CLOSURES: Press both side hook-and-loop panels until secure. Fit should be snug across the torso but must not restrict movement, breathing, or access to the duty belt.

5. CONFIRM SHOULDER PANEL SEATING: Verify that both shoulder breakaway points are properly seated and lying flat against the shoulder. Raised or misaligned shoulder panels can activate prematurely or fail to release cleanly under load.

6. INSERT CREDENTIALS INTO THE CHEST ID HOLDER: Place your ID or credentials into the clear vinyl chest pocket with full visibility. This eliminates the need for a lanyard, removing a separate snag and choking hazard from your equipment profile.

7. MOUNT THE RADIO MICROPHONE ON THE NON-DOMINANT SHOULDER: Route your radio speaker mic cable and clip it to the shoulder mic tab on your non-dominant side. This positioning minimizes interference with weapon manipulation on your dominant side.

8. STOW MISSION-ESSENTIAL TOOLS IN THE UTILITY POCKET: Place low-weight items such as a pen, notepad, or pocket flashlight in the designated pen and tool pocket. Do not attach heavy or critical equipment to the vest.

9. CONDUCT BREAKAWAY AND REASSEMBLY DRILL BEFORE DEPLOYMENT: Confirm you can identify and disengage from a simulated snag or grab scenario. Practice reassembly sequence: reconnect shoulder panels first, then side panels, then the front closure.

10. EXECUTE ACTION ON BREAKAWAY IN THE FIELD: If the vest releases during an incident, assess and disengage from the hazard first. Do not prioritize recovering the vest over personal safety. When the situation is controlled, recover the vest, inspect for damage, and reassemble in sequence before returning to post.
